Explain how a body falls faster at the same height from different forward speeds?

In the video shown, the speed to ground was accelerated like a catapult by essentially taking the rug out from under his feet. That is why speed does have a factor.

His hit the ground first and caused his head to slam. Had his head hit first, speed would not have mattered

Just throwing this out there, would't speed lessen the angle of impact causing less impact force or more of spreading that force over a distance? Kinda like throwing a rock straight at the ground versus throwing the same rock with the same force horizontally with the ground or even at an angle greater than 90?

Yup, and the faster he went, the harder his head would have hit.

Normally, yes, but not if something like the video happened.

I didn't read every single post, but this last page has got to be one of the silliest conversations I have ever witnessed. When speed is involved and you are hitting flat pavement, it all depends on the angle at which whatever body part hits the ground. Obviously If you high side and hit head first you're going to be a lot more screwed up than if you low side and slide on your back.

I'm not a physics major or anything, but I have broken my femur in half on a dirt bike before.

I went over the handle bars and when I went to roll, my knee hit the ground first. The lateral force of the rest of my body moving when my knee hit the ground caused my femur to snap in half right near the hip.
The Dr. said If it we my head that had hit the ground at that angle, my neck probably would have snapped and I'd be dead, helmet or not.

If I had just fell off the bike at the same angle when it wasn't moving, I would have probably gotten away with a bruised knee cap. If you're wearing a helmet and your head hits the ground at no speed, you're likely to get away with just a concussion. speed things up and the lateral force of your body moving at speed can cause all kinds of damage.

Yes gravity stays the same, but depending on the angle of the impact, speed can make a huge difference in the force of impact, even if it's just flat pavement. It all depends on the angle.

another scenario would be if you fall on your while not moving, it's not going to cause much damage. Fall on your at 100 mph and the momentum from the rest of your upper body still in motion is going to cause your upper body to slam into the ground pretty Fing hard.

Gear won't save you from every situation, but it definitely helps a lot.

This is common sense guys. Most Young children could figure this out.

I drove by this accident last night, just as the the ambulance was getting to the scene. At least 4 cars were stopped with several people on the side of the rode trying to assist the rider who was on his back with a blanket over him and his helmet was still on. Looked like he was wearing gloves to me as well. There was definitely a sense of terror from the people trying to help them. One was running with a blanket to cover them with. The bike was laid over on it's side on the shoulder of the highway about 40-50 feet in front of the injured riders. Kinda hard to tell how it all happened from driving by though.

I will say be careful out there. The nice weather the last few days has everyone driving their cages like crazy people. Lots of ungeared bikers out there too.

Gear helps, so stop making excuses not to wear it.

Third, then. Off duty HFD went down on the causeway around 6. Scrapes & bruises, but otherwise fine.
