It really depends on what you plan on doing with it. Riding it to work? Need to get on the highway a lot? Is it going to be a track day only bike? Are you wanting to use it for double duty track/street?

Many of those factors will change the recommendations you will receive. Wanting a first supermoto is just too vague to give you an suitable suggestion IMO.

For 2500 - 3000 you are very limited in finding a supermoto, however it is possible. I sold my 01 km 640 supermoto for 2750, it was a great bike. I don't know why, but people want an arm and a leg for the drz400sm. You're going to have a lot better luck finding a clean dual sport and save up for a supermoto wheel set down the road. Xr650r, ktm 640/625, or husqvarna 610. I've ridden a drz400sm and it's a great bike, but you'll get bored of it real soon. If you want a lighter 450 mx bike that is still somewhat maintenence free, I'd go for the wr450f. Secondly any ktm RFS motor.

What about converting a 250f mx bike? About how much would that run with used wheels?

Any 250f mx bike will have short gearing not suitable for highway use unless you put a small sprocket on the rear. Your first gear will suck at stop signs and your gears will still be very close after that. Not worth it IMO. The only suitable 250 supermoto worth anything is the wr250x. Any 250cc four stroke will be pretty gutless, and unhappy at 70mph. Yes it can do it, but you'll be MUCH happier on a big bore.

And to answer your question about cost, figure around 1800 for a decent 250f, then another 1000 for the cheapest option of wheels. DA or Warp9's are your only options there. They aren't top grade, but they'll work.
