As new as it gets...

...is probably the best way to describe me. I've always been interested in riding, but I hadn't gotten into it... until recently. To get an idea JUST how new I am...

I completed my motorcycle safety course last weekend (Awesome Cycles on Kuykendahl, great guys). I tried to take it the previous weekend, but the class was full. Instead, I drove around town looking at used motorcycles. After figuring out what style of bike I was interested in, I stumbled across a good deal at Mancuso Central. And thus, I purchased my first ever motorcycle... a 2006 Harley-Davidson Street Bob, midnight blue. I didn't touch the bike until after I started taking the course, mainly because I was out-of-town on business. I got my class M license yesterday.

I'm still getting used to my new bike and slowly building confidence. I got introduced to this site when I stopped by Motorcycles Unlimited on FM 1960, checking out their motorcycle maintenance course.

I don't have anyone to ride with and I'm definitely interested in meeting other riders, finding places to go, and generally causing mischief.

A little bit about myself, prior to my recent introduction into the motorcycle world... I'm 33 years old, married with two nit-wits (both girls, Lord help me), and I've lived in Houston since 2011. I live right off of FM 1960 around Veterans Memorial. I'm a 12 year veteran of the US Navy, attending the University of Houston upon my separation. I'm a musician, playing guitar, bass, and drums. And... I can't think of anything else...

I was hoping for some tips for the new guy, but I haven't seen any. What are some good rides to 'get my feet wet' before I embarrass myself with a group ride? I've been driving up and down the roads in my part of town, but no heavy curves. I haven't gotten the nerve to hit I-45 yet, but I don't think it will be too much longer.

Just take it easy wherever you ride. The highways can be intimidating but its not bad once you get out and do it. I try to stay ahead of or behind traffic clusters on the freeway and pass through them quickly if I get caught in one. Its all about seat time. The more you ride the more confident you will get. Learn to use those brakes. Keep your head on a swivel and have fun. Im sure awesome cycles went over this but for turns make sure yiu always look through them. Your going to go where you look. Have fun and be safe out there.

Welcome!

Also what did Motorcycles Unlimited say about that basic maintenance class? Was interested in the same thing and planned to ask about it when I get out there this week.

They said that there wasn't enough interest to do it on a frequent basis, but to monitor these forums for the next class that is offered.

In regards to forest next weekend, I would love to but I'll be out of town on business. I definitely want to ride out to Yankee's soon...
