Sweet! Use to cruise one of those back in the day. You could hold the shifter down when you were shifting into first and it would act like neutral until you let the shifter go. "Clutch drop" wheelies FTW. lol

Heres another concern. My camshaft is only showing two bolts on the cam gear, but the diagram shows there should be three bolts and a pressure plate (Item # 1), as seen below:
CamShaftDiagraqm zps2ae7efc2

I am wondering if this is another head on this bike, or if there is a difference somewhere I am missing. The plate controls oil flow to the rockers, so I am curious as what to do.

Could be an aftermarket cam and gear.

I had a 1983 ATC 70 in 1983 at the ripe old age of 3 years young, and the gears shifted down on that one as well. By age 6 I could shift down into 1st, hold the shifter down, give it some throttle and pop wheelies. I still want an ATC 70!!!

Heres the answer I got on Planets Minis

It's probably a newer XR/CRF50 roller bearing cammed head, looks to be a bearing behind the cam sprocket. Chances are, it is also an XR/CRF piston, which is from a long-rod engine. The '82 and up Z50R engines are also long-rod, making the XR/CRF piston compatible with your engine, as long as you use the XR/CRF head.

My Response
Long rod, as in the 4 rods that connect the top end assembly to the bottom end cases? I am unfamiliar with the earlier model motors (as was evident when I realized the shift pattern was different) I thought the inside of the head looked mighty clean, especially compared to how dirty the cylinder was on the outside.

he means long rod as in connecting rod from the crankshaft to the piston pin

Thanks Tim, I see that the 83 and up uses a 2 mm longer connecting rod, hopefully I can get this thing dialed in so I can get on with the fun part.

Well got the timing right, but now it won't start at all, thinking it had something to do with the points. Will have to verify the points gap again tomorrow.

Well I found out today that if I set the points while its on the de-compression cycle of TDC that it runs like a champ, so I am wondering if they put the cam sprocket on based on the de-compression stroke. Is the cam timing the same at 180 degrees? Crazy thing is it ran great for 10 minutes, now it wont start at all, sounds like a carb issue becuase of I crank the throttle all the way open it will sputter for a second, but anything else it just kicks. Checked the points again to make sure they were slippin out of gap and they were good. Thinking the main jet is clogged, or need to re-adjust the needle clip.
