I've seen this before on other forums... you end up with a user "rep" based on up or down votes of posts. Seems like when I've seen it used before each "up" vote was worth something like +10 pts and each "down" vote was only -1, so it took some serious work to make it to a -10k rep, but some people still managed it.

I was thinking about this the other day. I say we give it a try and see how it goes.

I have suggested this many times. I still vote for a "thank you" option vs a like dislike but of course I'm in for it either way, trial run at minimum.

I say try and see if it's a worthwhile feature.
Maybe there can be a "disable" function for the ones that don't want to use it.
I think you should see if there's a way to limit any one member down voting another member after so many (like 50 maybe).

Are not these emoticons the very expression (in vivid detail even) of how one feels about a post or a thread?

Thats far enough, unless you want more "likes" than explanations of WHY you "like" it.

Ryan, I actually loved that gif you posted.

A post with 12 likes is easier to view than 12 random quote replies with just a thumbs up in one single thread. I see what you mean, but I don't think having a Like button hurts. If someone doesn't like it, they don't have to use it.

But will the "Like/Dislike" feature have a way that we can like/dislike it?

You actually just proved my point. Having a button promotes a lack of participation on the users end, it's lazy. But I do understand what you mean about a cluttered thread with nothing but smileys. So would that affect the r.i.p. threads? Would it be only for posts or threads as well? I'm not bashing the idea, I don't always have the time to read a whole thread or all comments and I'm sure I'm not the only one. It just seems to me that it would be just as blanket and vague as someone posting a when they are being sarcastic.

Keith's comment about a "thank you" button for what's worthwhile has strong merit. Something like that rewards thoughtful posts & skirts around the issue of popularity contests & matches. Not sure the rly perverse/annoying/clueless ones would be all that discouraged by the thumbs down anyway. Maybe better to acknowledge what's useful or insightful while denying any real attention to all the other? In the Great Long Ago, there was talk about putting lil ban-hammer stickers on bikes--like bombs painted on war planes.
