Moto GP racing sure took its toll on his body.

Maybe he will come back as a commentator?

Ducati Motor Holding and Ben Spies announced today that the American will not be racing in 2014 after the parties reached agreement to resolve Ben’s current contract with the Italian racing manufacturer,’ reads a Saturday statement.
‘The 29-year-old Texan had signed a two-year agreement with Ducati at the end of last season to race in MotoGP™ in 2013 and 2014 as part of the factory-supported Ignite Pramac Racing Team.’

Having injured his right shoulder while competing with Yamaha Factory Racing in the 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix, Spies required further rehabilitation this year and suffered a further setback when he crashed in free practice at Indianapolis.

‘The resulting operations on both shoulders have left Spies feeling that his physical ability to ride next year remains in question and a decision was jointly made by Ducati and Ben to release Ben from any requirement to race in 2014,’ the statement adds.

Ben Spies:

“I had such high hopes for racing for Ducati and Ducati has been incredibly supportive of me during this challenging year, so I am tremendously disappointed that I have not been able to fulfill my personal goals and team goals with Ducati. I want to thank everyone from racing organizations, factories, teams and all my fans for helping me and supporting me throughout my career. I never dreamed that I would reach the level of success that I have over the past 20 years of racing, but the time has come to stop and I do so with great sadness.”

Mary Spies, mother and manager to Ben:

“Wherever Ben has raced over the years – from AMA Superbike to World Superbike to MotoGP™ – he has always felt the warmth and appreciation of the organizers, circuits, teams and fans. We are so grateful to them for their support.”

Paolo Ciabatti, Ducati MotoGP Project Director:

“We had high expectations when Ben joined Ducati in MotoGP™ this year and we really hoped that he would fully recover from his Indianapolis crash injuries and continue to race for us in the future However, we understand the reasons for his decision and respect them. It is really a shame for our sport that Ben will not be racing anymore because in our opinion he is one of the most talented riders in the world. We will miss him and wish him all the best for his future life.”

Yah...so was Stoner...and Bayliss...and Mladin...and Schumacher...and Johnny Hopkins...and the list goes on.

He'll get the itch and be back, he never once has said he won't ever race again, he said he won't be racing in 2014.

If you were to have seen one of the other threads where I commented you would have read that one of my closest friends from here in Dallas who now resides in New Zealand, is bens personal assistant. He said bens been planning retirement since last year unannounced. He is investing in property in Dallas and has a burger joint with a partner here too. He's moving on. Has been planning on it for a long while now. My buddy ehrin moved to New Zealand last year to work for Porsche and soon after was offered the opportunity to be bens pa. It has been cut short by a year. Now ehrins back in New Zealand and it's all done. Maybe he will come back one day but I doubt it.

I'm not saying his retirement wasn't planned...I would've started to plan retirement the first time I rode that Ducati too. Investing in real estate is just a smart thing to do with money, doesn't mean he's done. I don't think he will ever return to motogp, but as of right now I'd be more willing to bet that he races again...somewhere on something besides a pedal bike.

Can't say that alot of us did not see this coming, his time after leaving Tech3 has not been good to say the least.

Next year we'll see Josh Herin in the Moto2 paddock, hopefully he can bring some American kickings to the world level as CEII, NH, JH and BS did back in their days, as long as JH does well for the next 2 years, he's likely to make his way into the biggest league of them all and ride a MotoGP M1, or maybe we'll see him on the Suzuki in 2015?

I'd say Beaubier is our next hope...or Joe Roberts. Herrin is a scrapper so maybe he does well in moto2 and then they will reinstate the rookie rule

I guess we'll have to wait a few months to see what happens, I am excited to have a good reason to watch the Moto2 racing action for next season other than the general close competition, we'll at least have someone familiar to us to root for, now lets just hope he gets a good machine and he can come to terms with it quick enough to put a dent into some of the other top 10 riders helmets.
