i'm sure it's a scam. here is what he sent me in an e-mail:

"The bike is still for sale. Never had any mechanical problems. I must tell you that I had to move to UK one month ago with my work and I took the bike with me hoping to drive it here as well. I work in Public relations departament at a hotel here and because of this job I change my home quite often. Here I had an unpleasant surprise because the bike is an US model and to pay the registration here in Europe, to pass all the emissions and standards and many other would be quite expensive and nobody would do it. I have tried to sell it locally but it was not succesfully. That is why I am trying to sell the bike back in USA, there will be no further problems because the bike passes US emissions standards and DOT & EPA as long as it has been purchased in US space. The shipping and handling ar included in the price.
If interested please reply asap. Shipping takes 7-8 days.
Thank you for your time."

Big time scam!

If you find a bike you like, bring it by and I'll do a test ride and visual inspection at no charge. Make sure you let me know you're on Moto Houston!

If you're going to wait that long, then chances are good you'll find a good deal. I was set to buy one new and got a call from the dealer I'd been talking to, and he told me about a used ZZR in the color I was looking for and would sell it to me for $1K less than a new one. The bike had a little over 500 miles and was about 3 months old. Keep in touch with dealers and Patrick and see what comes up.

Definitely worth it, you can't beat FREE. I had a bike checked by Motorcycles Unlimited before purchasing. It feels a lot better buying used after having it looked over by a professional.

Getting a seller to let you take the bike over to Motorcycles Unlimited would be difficult though. However, if the dude/dudette is honest, they should have no problems bringing the bike for an inspection.

It depends on what part of town the bike is on. Offer to buy the gas or ind a truck to haul it in and have the seller come along.

It they aren't willing to let you take it to a show for an inspection then there is something wrong with it and you will need to keep looking.

SOme factors but not a perfect science:
Look for low mileage examples
Garage kept
Maintenence records (previous owner is probably and good at routine stuff)
Older rider
OEM factory rubber with tread and a good amount of chicken strips on the tires. If they have original low mileage tire...probably not thrashed.
Look at the chain...loose and dirty or clean and tight?
Look at the fork seals. If they are leaking, eveidence of wheelies. Also, look at the fork travel marks. If they are exceptionally high, they may also indicate wheelies which are bad for suspension components.

What type of bike are you interested in?
