Yamaha Virago 250cc

Will windscreen make me faster? (250cc)

Hello all,

I got a 250cc Virago with rejet and drilled baffles and cone air filter and 17/40 gears (taller than stock). Getting indicated speeds of 65sh MPH on open road, but can go faster, indicated 85-90 if there is no wind (if road is banked by tall walls).

So, since little 250 has no power to plow thru wind, perhaps a small windscreen will make me more aerodynamic and I might see faster than 65 on open road?

Thank you!

I doubt it will have any noticeable effect. Windscreens on sport bikes work in conjunction with the fairings. Just slapping a windscreen on there could possibly do more harm. Now if your looking to keep the buffeting down, go for it.

With vs without the fairings on my 600 I had at least a 20 mph difference in top speed.
I would imagine that a windscreen would help as well.

I think it would help. Even another 6-7 MPH would make cruising nicer.

Not to rag on ya, but its a 250 Virago. Speed wasn't part of its design specs.

I agree, but struggling at highway speeds? Something needs to be done about that. If it's a new bike, so be it. That would scare me to be cruising in traffic with nothing left. That takes away an escape route.

Guys, here is an update: problem was slipping clutch. With new friction plates from XT250 dirtbike I am able to cruise at 75-80. Still have not installed windscreen though.

Thanks!

As for the gears, they are a popular upgrade for 250 Viragos, which are geared extremely low in stock form - basically 1st gear is useless. Sprocket change takes away 1st gear and adds one gear on top.

Dont listen to anyone here that says no.

The right windscreen will give you up to 30% more top speed, easily.

True strory.

30% sounds very optimistic, as someone else mentioned full fairings help along with windscreen
