Byrdman,

Not to take away from Motohouston, but over at www.TWTEX.com there is a whole devoted group of GPS users with threads, even a local GPS class once in a while, and complete maps of every trail system in Texas for download if you hit up the right person. With their help, you can navigate to Tierra del Fuego and back and always know exactly who's track and where you are. Down to good scenic views, restaurants, gas, etc... CRAZY!

I got the tracks for the East TX 500 from twtex and I plan on riding it on the way to/from my dad's house near Mt Pleasant when I get the gspd sorted out.

The east tx 500 is a blast. Did that last year. My dad did it this year and they canceled it the first day. That was last week I think.

We got lost Saturday as well but it wasn't pouring (yet).
I've got a zumo 550 as well. You can load any garmin map on there you want. I've even loaded marine charts for the water.

Garmin's latest (the Montana 650) is really nice, but a bit pricey for just riding the woods. I've got one, and really like it so far. For a lot less, you can pick up a used 60CSx on ADVrider, Craigslist, etc., and it will serve you just fine. I suggest these because they are smaller, ruggedized for outdoor use, and proven. Like someone already mentioned, check out the GPS threads on ADV; lots of good info there.
