Welcome. Go take the MSF class and get yourself a book like 'Proficient Motorcycling, The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well', preferably before you get a bike.

I have done minor riding before. Nothing street though. I know to start small and work up. Thanks for the tip on the book I will see if I can locate it. I'm still a few months out before I buy but definately plan on taking the MSF basic.

Good idea joining the forum, lots of info.

1. Take MSF with Awesome Cycles
2. Learn braking
3. Ride (twisties or street...twisties preferred)
4. Track day (learn your and bike limits)
5. do what you gotta do (street? track? both!) (me: track!)

Welcome to Motohouston. Just started riding in April. I have Ninja 300 and love it. I did a lot of research on bikes .. like a months worth before purchasing.

http://cycle-ergo.com/ is a good site for riding position on bikes. Sitting on them is the best way but gives you an idea.

Youtube videos and just talking to people here starting small and working your way up is the best way to stay on 2 wheels. There are many different opinions on starting with a 250/300 vs 650 (ninja 650, sv650), or even a 600 cc bike.

Do your research, watch videos, buy gear a little at a time while you are waiting .. you can spend 500-1000 on gear so everything at one drop can hit ya. take your msf and have fun. It takes some getting use to being around the cars and trucks but its a blast. This forum has a lot of experienced riders just make your questions as specific as possible to get a good response vs general statements.
