Anti Helmet Lobbyists

There was a great article in USA today about the push for helmet laws in states that either have no helmet or lax helmet restrictions. Here is the link

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/...met-laws_N.htm

There were a few things that disturbed me in the article.

1. Motorcycle fatalities soared from 2,116 in 1997 to 4,553 in 2005 as other roadway deaths declined. Motorcycle riding also grew, but the fatality rate nearly doubled from 1997 to 2004, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

2. But helmet use dropped from 71% in 2000 to 51% in 2006,

3. Proposed helmet laws have been strongly opposed by rider groups such as American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE), which say wearing a helmet should be a rider's choice. Those groups have helped push 27 states since 1975 to weaken helmet laws by applying them only to young riders

4. After he introduced Delaware's first mandatory-helmet bill in more than 20 years on March 14, state Rep. Gary Simpson got e-mails from people vowing to campaign against his re-election. "It's a very strong lobby," Simpson said. I guess I've really been ignorant to the fact that there are large organizations that lobby against helmet law. I mean they actually put political pressure on public officials just like any PAC.

5. And last but not least Ben Roethlisberger. So much of the push for tighter helmet laws is actually due to Big Ben. I mean never mind the obvious stats that say over 1500 lives were saved due to helmets. Disregard the death rate for those that don't wear one. But because an NFL quarterback narrowly escapes death with multiple face fractures America realizes that helmets are a good thing?

your thoughts?

keep it the way it is

i dont like wearing a helmet either, messes up my hair. :confused2.. just playin, I always wear my helmet, but i think the age requirement (21) should stay in effect. At the age of 21 youre old enough to decide for yourself.

I think this topic has been beaten to death though.

Nah, if you read the article, they are actually lobbying against wearing helmets. Or more accurately the choice to not wear one. That's why I said Anti-Helmet.

Didn't an A.B.A.T.E. state director recently die in a motorcycle accident?

The A.B.A.T.E. people are pretty loony with their stance on helmet laws. I think it's fine for them to push for rider's choice when it comes to wearing or not wearing a helmet, but they actually insist that helmets are dangerous, do not save lives and actually are the cause of many deaths.

there are lots like this ^

Law or no law, I wear a helmet. It's a choice that every person should be allowed to make on their own. People have the right to make stupid choices so long as it is made clear to them that they are responsible for the actions of said choices.

The only helmet law there should be is one saying that if you are subjected to head trauma has a direct result of you not wearing a helmet, no public funds shall be used in healing you.

I'm glad they dont have any laws to wear helmets, the prices would rise on their own somehow(remember the insurance law, how they said the price would come down if they make it a law).

There should be a law where if you have a helmet, wear it or not. Strapping a helmet to the bike without actually wearing one should result in a fine.

I think the age should be lowered to 18! Or raise the age to join the military to 21!

I want the freedom to be stupid without the government saving me from myself. It is the insurance companies that want to force you to wear helmets and seatbelts.
Next they won't let us run with scissors either...

You can still enjoy this helmetless if you meet the requirements in TX.

It just kills me that they are powerful enough to swing an election.
