Great pics! Looks like an awesome trip so far.

Thinking of trading in the SV650 for something more "toury"(made up that word).

Hey Jim,
After the Pikes Peak climb yesterday, came back to the motel and stayed there avoiding the heavy rain. Today we wanted to ride some more and visit the Bishop Mountain Castle. But the forecast in the morning was 70% rain all day, so decided to come to Denver. We checked in to the hotel in the afternoon, and took a nap that lasted more than expected. Just had a little bite and came back to the room, and we are packing to leave tomorrow morning back to Houston. It would have been nice to see you, but gotto get up early, and right now we are both trying to get some rest after 7 days of riding.
I had to miss PPHC race last month due to some business emergency, but coming back next year for sure. But, during this trip, i totally fell in love with Colorado, and will be coming more often for pleasure. Will make sure to let you know in advance. Sorry have to miss seeing you this time.

When I was in CO. I spent the summer in Meeker 40miles north of Rifle. In 5 months that summer I put 12K miles on my Magna touring all over the area your talking about. UT,WY, and CO.
Your making me miss it even more than I already do.

Since your trip sounds as if it's almost over so I guess it's kind of late to warn you of the wildlife, but watch out this time of yr. There is an over abundance of them and they are eating 24/7 right now so watch out for them. If your still in the area coming thru New Mexico to get home. It is even more crowded with Mule Dear. Chamas, NM is where I hit my 9 point (with my Magna) this same time of yr. and I almost got 2 more later that night. The Elk- get tunnel vision when running and will run right out in front of you.

Independence Pass was one of my favorite places to camp on the weekends and then I'd go rockclimbing during the day. It's also the only place I've ever laid my Magna down. They put sand down for the snow and I ran up on it at one of the hairpin turns. Snow was gone but the sand wasn't.

Enjoy the rest of your journey and thanks for posting it up.

Reese

Reese,
I'm so in love with this region, I'm thinking of leaving my V-strom here next year, so have reason to keep coming back to ride. We were lucky didnt have so many encounters with wild animals. But yes, it could get a little scary when they come across you. Robert had a close call once, when a deer ran across him at night missing him by a foot. And a fox or something that ran across the highway in front of him on the way to Jackson hole. I had a deer in front of me in Indepence pass about 10 feet in front of me (have a video ans will posr when I'm back). Other than that, had no issue. We are too old and spoiled to camp, especially in the rain, so stayed in the motels. We will fly back to Houston and have the bikes towed by a friend who brought the bikes here as well, so from here to Houston will be good. Thanks for the advise.

Sneak peek of Fast and Furious 7
It looks like there will be a scene with the back of a bus blown out and a woman falling out of it. A stunt woman was getting geared up with a bungy cord in the back of the bus. And some cars that might be in the scene. There were others that coudn't get them on Go Pro, and they were all with all terrain tires on, and a couple of drifting cars.

Too cool. If I only had the luxury of being away for 2-3wks... I would pack my bike in a New York minute.

No need to be gone that long. Viffer came up on a Thursday night, and we did 1K over the next three days and hit most of the good roads in CO. He flew home Mon. So basically a 4 day weekend.

Different routes could take in WY and UT areas by adding another day or so.

Driving up with the bike would add another couple days; it's right at 18 hrs from Houston to here.

1 day ride up there is impractical. So 2days of super slabbing each way is minimum. That kind of investment calls for at least 6-8 days of funning around. So I figure 2wks is the short end.

I like northern NM a lot, and if I ever get a vacation home and leave one of my bikes there, that'll make it a whole lot easier.

Or maybe store a bike somewhere that'll keep it on a charger, make sure it's running every once in a while. Heck of a lot cheaper than a vacation home!

We were fortunate to have a friend who was happy to play teamster for us. So we were able to do a Friday->following Saturday trip, or 9 days total, including flying in & out. He did the four day round trip slabbing. Had to pay the fuel & his motels for the slabbing part, but that was it.

New Zealand has a pretty good cottage industry of bike rentals to the sport-touring/adventure touring crowd who fly in to ride the country. I believe Colorado has a few rental businesses that rent more than just Harleys & Goldwings.

This place has fat sport-tourers, some smaller BMWs, and V-Strom available:
