Looking for a good cheap Motard, what should I look for?

Was really interested in that klx250sf bored out to 351 a few months ago, but was too indecisive. Guy who lives near me ended up picking it up and I rode it.... so much fun!!!

Anyways I'm looking to pick up a cheap street legal motard to have fun around. The cheaper the better. Preferably in the 2K region or lower lol. That kind of puts the DRZ/WRX out of the question right?

Is another Klx my only option? Will a non bored out version be too boring? I want to practice wheelies and just goof around around town on it ha.

Any opinions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The ones you saw are dirt models. You can throw street rubber on there, but they have softer suspensin and weak brakes. 17" wheels suspension work and better braks your at what it would cost to buy the sm version

if it's your first Tard, go for the DRZ400sm. out the box, it's ready to ride.

it's not the fastest. but it is a TANK! And, once you uncork it with an exhaust and a FCR you'll have plenty of power to get in trouble with the law.

It will be hard to find one under $3,000 street legal and converted to SM.

If I were looking now, I'd buy the KTM that's been for sale for a while in the classifieds at $3,000. It's a freaking bargain. I don't think it is street legal, but that is not too difficult as long as it has a title. Chad could help you with that, I bet.

EDIT: This looks good as well, just got to get it started, but even if it is a bust, the parts are worth more than $2500.

That KTM is super sweet. How much more power does the 550 have over the 450?

550? Or did u mean 650?
The 450s are about ~75lbs lighter, rev a of a lot faster and I think put out about the same power. A 450 will pull my 650 all day long...but in the end the 650 feels great and doesnt have any issues running at HWY speeds all day long...valve adjustment on the 650 takes about 15 min as opposed to 2hours on a 450.

Im thinking of getting a 12 WR450f to tard out or Find a KTM 690SMC...

I'll make a deal with you.

If you can start my WR426, you can ride it.
It is in its natural state of dirtyness (18/21 knobbies), but it will give you an idea of the hooliganism that is readily available

a Motard is just a fookin dirt bike with leetle wheels.

You can motard a KLR if you want.

I know you think tracking a 600 class is fun......wait until you take a motard for a spin....you'll want to sell the 600 and slap yo momma.

The torque most thumpers put out is mind boggling. 3rd gear rolling wheelies are kinda fun. Plus it is a whole lot easier to flick around 250lbs vs 350lbs

Like I said, if you want to try out the WR just let me know
(you break it, you fix it)

ive been already thinking of selling the street bike ... but idk where to sell it, you think anyone would take in a trade in? dealerships or something? I'll let it go for cheap. thats the only way i can buy a motard right now, unless i go to the bank and take out a little loan

making one street legal in TX is easy, very easy.

hi/low beam
brake light (must work on foot and hand lever)
tail light
Plate light
one mirror
horn
DOT tires

no need for a $600 kit

you can do it for as little as $250 ( or less. not including tires)

I have $200 in tires (Pirelli MT21 knobbies)
$36 bar switch (hi/low beam/ horn button/ turn signal switch for later use)
$45 for both brake pressure switches
$7 H4 bulb
$8 Headlight socket
$20 for a mirror
any horn will work...so $5 to $20
already had the factory headlight housing and a fender with tail light/brake light came with the purchase.
You can get the headlight ready to go for $100
a DS under fender light/plate holder for under $50

Actually, the brake light doesn't need to work on both the footbrake AND lever. Just one or the other to pass inspection. Also, as far as the hi-low beam goes, I wired that in on my bike. BUT, I later learned that you only need a running headlight and that there is no requirement for a high and low beam.. If I remember right, anyways. Might as well set it up for hi-low beam while you're already at it..
