Normal procedure when finding a loaded gun is to call the police, but remain at the site. As you see the officer's vehicle approach you are to fire 3 shots just over the roof to inform the officer that you are the person who found the gun. So he doesn't just drive by.
Display the gun openly, holding it by the handle, with an outstretched hand as if to hand it to the officer by the barrel so he can clearly see you are offering him control of the direction of fire.
