Went for a ride and found a pistol!

Went for a short 120 mile ride this morning on my new to me FZ1. Headed up to the forest, stopped at an intersection and see a pistol in the middle of the road. Turned out to be a Kahr CW9. Called the Sheriffs dept when I got home. They came and filed a report, took the pistol. Officer stated it wasn't reported as stolen. Anyone else ever find a firearm?

Me and a buddy found one off the side of the road when we were kids. It was marked game warden on it. (later found out they auction them off after used for duty) we brought it to hic dad. Not sure what he did with it. But he wasn't required to turn it in or anything

The person that lost it may not have even known it was missing yet. Definitely not worth it to me to call and see if it was stolen without reporting I found it. If 2 weeks, 2 months or 2 years later someone reports it stolen, I don't want to have a problem.

If for some reason they call and ask you any other questions about it, even though you didn't do anything, don't say anything, nothing, and get a lawyer.

Good for you doing the right thing. Not sure the owner should get it back if they cant keep from losing their gun in the middle of the road.

I found a .38 once. PoPo took it and gave me a receipt for it and told me that if it had not been used in a registered crime or reported stolen, it would be mine in 90 days. It's in my nightstand drawer.

Maybe someone who rides, carries while riding? Maybe they didn't know they lost it.

I once found a .22 rifle out in the national forest. It was leaning up against a tree and was a solid ball of rust.

Someone set it there and forgot about it, apparently!

You didn't miss much. I bought a brand new CW40 at a gun show because it was very reasonably priced. Went to shoot it at the range and hated it. I've never shot a pistol that hurt the web of my hand more.

When I got home, I found plastic shavings from the metal slide riding on plastic rails. Even my smallest pocket pistol has metal "insets" on the plastic rails to help guide the slide and offer more wear resistance. The CW40 rails is ALL plastic.

Ended up selling it to another dealer at the next gun show. Blech....

I'd think that just as with any other kind of found-property that you'd get to keep it after a period of time but in this case it'll probably end up as some cop's backup gun, lol.

Hope you had fun on the FZ.

Good on you for turning the pistol over. I lost my favorite 1911 in the woods of NC many years ago. It was my favorite carry. I had it in my back pack, and the pack was strapped to the seat.

A few whoops, a few jumps, bumps and water crossings, it escaped by unzipping the bag and never to been seen again :(
