Many thanks to everyone's input!
I just decided that I'm not going to invest in it. I'm just glad I can have a bike to learn the track on and i really dont need to waste 600 on the fairing kit when 600 + the bike is almost enough to upgrade.

I think I'll do as many track days as possible then upgrade to a Gsxr 600. (i know. theyre really common and squids ride em, but its a great bike for a great price - unless anyone has any better suggestions?)

Just ride. I'm not sure that I wouldn't even PLAN an upgrade right now. By the time it's time to actually do it, you might want something else.

there is plenty that can be done to the gs500 on the cheap. It will never be on the level of an sv but you can have a BLAST learning to work on bikes with the GS. Its super simple, and everything is easy to get to. I really miss mine.

check out gstwins.com (not a competitor with this site so i hope thats ok)
Its a small but extremely friendly community over there, with some folks who race the gs500 for giggles.

a few hundred bucks will get you all new suspension (well, used but from other bikes the r6 shocks fit perfectly) new brakes, braided lines, and some generic bars and off you go.
