The harleys/buells go into skip spark mode, then double skip spark mode, then finally kill the engine. I've only had it happen once in 114 degree stop and stop traffic. The us military had water and air cooled tanks and found that in higher heat environments the air cooled were more reliable and actually scavenged heat better than the water cooled counterparts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interna...ng#Air-cooling

The liquid-cooled Harley V-Rod motor, developed by Harley-Davidson then made street legal according to the EPA by Porsche, was originally an Erik Buell project, designed for a fully faired AMA Superbike Buell by 1998.[8] Harley decided the engine should also be used in a sport-cruiser, then took over development, making it "too big, too heavy, too expensive and too late" for Buell.[8]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buell_Motorcycle_Company

One more thing Harley screwed Erik on.

Some more detail on the patent. This isnt a truly water cooled engine, it just routes water over the head casing around the exhaust valve. Lame. Looks like from the patent pics so they can keep using the existing heads and make this a bolt on accessory. While it does give 10% more torque, it's mainly from higher compression. Oh yeah, and givings you heating in the winter, cause we all know Harley touring riders ride in the winter...

Interesting...

Fig. 2, 3 & 15 in the above post looks like the VROD radiator cover with the air intakes.

Why they don't implement this cooling gizmo in all new 2014 bikes?

I know a guy that adapt a computer fan for the rear cylinder in his Street Glide. He swears it works....

The XBs have a rear fan but you still need the after market right side scoop with the stock left to keep it from running 24/7. One the down side, makes your sweaty...

The Buell XB's were some of the greatest bikes coming from HD. Too bad they kill the project.

Will like to attempt the fan gizmo in the rear cylinder of the Sportster. I don't feel it overheating but just in case.

This style of thinking went out with the knuckleheads, starting with the Evo if you do the maintenance they don't break (mostly) just like any other bike.

I'm on my third one and ride the out them with no problems.

How much engine heat does it give off in traffic? More or less than a liquid cooled sport bike?

Is the Duc air cooled, too?

Yeah both are air-cooled.

The Sportster isn't cool by any means, but isn't extremely hot to where I don't wanna ride it. Im sure there are others that are hotter.

The Duc, I haven't really ridden it yet. Its been at Motorcycles Unlimited getting a refresh.

I really havent had many issues with mine except that was from it siting for several years. 20K miles in 110+ heat and 30 freezing over 1 year and no major issues until today.
