Sam Houston National Forest riding/camping trip 9/28

Sam Houston National Forest trail ride and camping trip

A weekend of dirty shenanigans.

9/28-9/29

We will be meeting at one of the trailheads (TBD) between 8am and 9am and camp there saturday night (camp site TBD). For those of us that survive the night we will do another trail ride on Sunday.

I'm open to suggestions on the logistics of where to meet and set up camp etc. Camping at one of the trailheads would be ideal but I'm not sure which ones they allow camping at. We'll firm up the plans closer to the date of the trip as certain trails may be closed that weekend.

This of course will be a dirt ride only. ATVs can be used on the trails as well. The SHNF requires a spark arrestor and OHV sticker which can be purchased at a few shops around town. I don't really care if you ride dirty but just be aware that you can be ticketed without them.

If a lot of people show we will split into multiple small groups to avoid a clusterfuck from constantly stopping for stalled and downed bikes.

Rules:
1. BYOB
2. Don't be the first one to fall asleep
3. Last one back to camp is a rotten egg

Gear requirements:
1. Pants

its certainly far enough away that i can agree to it and there are no TORCS races that weekend.

I likely won't camp.

That's why I picked the last weekend in September . No TORCS, CMRA, or Ridesmart events that weekend.

I'm pretty sure Kelly's pond is the only trailhead you can camp out and ride out from, have fun and stay safe.

Clark, do you know any about the rules concerning night riding out there?

If I make it up there with a spare bike, do you want to get some ride time on a 200?

Checked today and that is correct. I believe you can also access the west side trailhead from Kelly's Pond so we can have more than one option. Also not opposed to packing up Sunday morning and then moving over to a different trailhead if someone has a favorite they really want to ride.

I checked yesterday and the website says you have to have both a headlight and a taillight and you can ride at night. If you come you might as well camp. It's going to be like Lord of the Flies only we'll keep our clothes on.

Hopefully it won't be 98 degrees like today. I remember seeing a travel trailer at Kelly's pond last winter. Nice place to camp. Maybe get drunk and shoot some guns. That is always a good idea. I will see if I can line up some hookers and blow.

Is your toy hauler functional? If not, I know someone who may let me borrow a camper. Will have to put the bikes in the truck though. Should be in the 80's by then but some A/C is always nice.
