Prevalence of stolen bikes in Houston?

Hey guys,

I just moved to Houston from NYC like 2 weeks ago.

How bad is Houston in terms of bike thefts?

Maybe I'm being overly paranoid, but I bought a brand new bike (Zx6r absolutely LOVE her) and am currently keeping it in my apartment complex's garage. I put her as close as to my door as possible, lock the bars, lock the back wheel with a heavy duty lock and close the garage door.

What do you guys do to further prevent theft? I think I'm going to buy a bike alarm and a lock for my garage door with an alarm. I couldn't bear the thought of my baby getting stolen .

Lets hear it fellas.

Don't leave it out of sight! My neighbor at my last apt put anchors in the concrete inside his garage so that he could chain it to the floor. Get low jack and theft coverage!

Btw. I've seen a bike just like yours that started cruising through my complex recently. Was that you squiddin it earlier?

There is no way to prevent theft. You can make the thief's job harder, but you can't stop him if he is determined. Get insurance if you're parking in an apartment complex or other high risk area.

I know, I've been reading those horror stories.

Most of them though were parked outside it seems and not a garage.

It kind of blows my mind that these guys will try and steal bikes in Texas. It seems like a great way of getting shot.

Haha, not THAT paranoid when taking it out to restaurants and stores.

Be sure to add comprehensive coverage on your moto insurance.

BTW, we use "y'all" a lot.

Go to youtube, and check out bike theft videos. Couple of big dudes and a van/truck...there's no time to go get a gun it happens so fast.

Disc locks for stores / work. But not many do more.

Work is your second fear.... someone will see it daily, know it's alone for 8hrs, and you GENERALLY don't have a safe place for it. If you can, leave a heavy duty chain at work to use as a lock while there.

I avoid theatres and malls, but never worry about restaurants where it's close to or in sight. Rode to the movies once... didn't like the feeling that anyone would've known I was gone for 2 hrs.

Sounds like you are pretty safe with what you do in the garage.... but you never know.

lojack is about the only thing that helps. I had 2 disc locks on mine when it was stolen. A friend of mine said they put them on skateboards, and roll it to a truck. Disc locks mean nothing to them.

Mine was stolen on the 2nd floor of my garage in a nice complex. Theft insurance is a must. If you really want to improve the odds, pay for a nearby storage unit.
