Why doesn't my bike reach top speed?

I held it at full throttle for about 12 seconds in both directions but it hovered around 160, but the factory top speed is 187.

Is this normal with 5 year old bikes or what else could be the cause?

Your weight ... were you tucked in all the way? Going into a headwind? Just a few off the top of my head.

Is this on your 600?

If so, 160mph indicated is all you're gonna get... Probably really 155 ish on GPS..

A 600 wouldn't do 187 mph falling out of the back of a Boeing 747..

GPS is your friend...(and sometimes not)

The 160mph is your top speed!

To break the 180mph you would need a much bigger motor with more hp!

A 2 second google search shows on multiple forums that 165 with stock ecu/sprockets is all you are going to get. The CBR1000RR is rated at 187, the CBR600RR, only 160.

The 187 is a gentleman's agreement between all major manufacturers to keep the governments out of limiting bike speeds and power.

"
In 2000, fears of a European regulatory backlash or import ban led to an informal agreement between the Japanese and European manufacturers to limit the top speed of their motorcycles at an arbitrary limit."

But yeah my helmet was almost on the tank. Nevermind, I remembered seeing 187 somewhere but after a google search I found it's reported to be 165.

Different variables play when your going that fast. Majority of most of these guys said, weight/headwind/tire pressure/ gas quality etc... I have a 600 and I topped mine out at 170-175 with slip on, stock sprockets, stock ecu.

Change your sprockets. 52 in the back and a 14 in the front. Your speedo should read around 235 for top speed now. You'll have the fastester 600 in da world.

Of course you might be getting passed by 300's, but just ignore them.

With the thread you posted about your chain and then assuming the general maintenance you do on your bike (or don't do). I wouldn't try anything over posted speed limit.
