problems with first gear

Sometimes when I want to shift into first gear it won't go into it it just stays in neutral and itdit doesn't always do it

Does this only happen at a standstill from neutral, or does it also resist if you're moving and drop from 2nd to 1st?

From a stand still it will do it and if I'm downshifting to a stop light it will drop right into first gear

There was an article in Cycle World a few months back explaining why this happens. It's common and completely normal. Try rolling the bike forward with the clutch in, pressing down on the shifter until it engages. I'll try type up the reason once I get home if I can find which month they printed it.
