Why wouldn't they (sidi & the people that sell them) say leather if they were? I have never had them in my hands, I'm just going by the info on the website.

Back to the OP. How are these legal?

I work at one of the largest law firms in the country and it just so happens we have quite a few intellectual property (IP) attorneys right here in our Houston office. I reached out to one that works in Trademark Infringement and Patent Litigation.

Here is what my IP attorney says. "It is your obligation only to go get the best deal you can. It is SIDI's responsibility to go after this manufacturer if indeed there is any trademark or patent infringement."

After showing him my photos he went on to say that there is likely no Trademark Infringement because the SIDI name and logo are not used on the Speed boots and I was not confused at all about who made them.

As to intellectual property rights there could possible be some issue with the a few aspects of the design if they are patented to SIDI, specifically the calf adjustment feature. Utilitarian elements like the toe guard, ankle guards and such cannot be patented and if they are they can easily be disputed as utilitarian.

In other words, if there is any ethical conflict here, it is solely your conflict to bear. There is no legal problem with any of us buying a similar looking product.

Well, that's it ladies and gents. I look forward to hearing a longer-term test results and possibly saving 70% on my next pair of boots

ah, so the off brand is still made at the same plant, just with a different name slapped on it? I'm used to knock offs...purses, etc....as being lower quality.

Ok here is my report. Rode my new Speed Vortice knockoffs last night. Without question THE most comfortable boots I have ever ridden in. The air flow is incredible.

Pros - Fit (although 1/2 larger than normal) I wear 10 and the 10.5 fits really well. Comfort and adjustability are great as. Fabulous looking as well

Cons - I have never owned Vortices before but they use they use a ski boot like shell/entry system, which is fine, but the closure system is this monofilament dial system which sucks. For me because of my Popeye style calves it was very difficult to use.

Overall for the $189 price I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I went for an hour long ride this morning and was pleasantly surprised. After a few minutes I totally forgot I was wearing something other than my SIDI. ...even though I wish they were a half size larger they were not bad. In fact if I would have ordered the 10 they may be slightly to big but I could at least wear thicker socks and they would feel even better.

Calf area is definitely smaller than SIDI but at the widest setting I am Ok. My calves are about 17" around. If my calves were any bigger I would have problems.

Anyway the sole does not seem quit as firm as my SIDI. The sole also seems a little thinner. That may just be in my head though and is not really a bad thing as I get pretty good feedback through them. It could mean a little less life than the SIDI though.

I think I am going to sell these US9.5 and order US10.

....then again if I just wear these on a few rides they will probably break in nicely. Maybe I just forgot what it was like to have a brand new set of pleather boots?

I wonder how they will hold up to regular street use? I am still wearing my SIDs same pair for 3 years now but I don't do track. I will probably only wear the Speed boots if something happens to my SIDI. Fortunately I only paid $85 for the speed boots.
