Sturgis, first time

I'm riding up to Sturgis with a couple of buddies, first time for all of us. Just wondering if anyone else is going this year, and for those who have been, any advice as far as camping?

Only night we're planning on staying at buffalo chip is Wed, for the Rob Zombie / Mastodon / Machine Head concert.

anyplace you can laydown is going to be stupit expensive.

imagine 80,000 obnoxious Pirates....

I went in 2010, BUT, I was there the week before. It was much more pleasent.
Camped on the south end of town at Ft. Meade rec area.
They threw me out day 1 of the rally, they use it for LEO.

Except for the nights we're doing concerts (may stay at broken spoke for Korn on Tue. night as well), we're looking at camping at koa's away from the actual rally. Someplace that's on the side where we want to ride out the next day anyway.

Three friends and I are riding out sat morning getting in town sun night and doing the rally experience monday. Tues morning riding the black hills and going to see mt Rushmore and crazy horse. Then taking the rest of the week to ride back Wyoming, Colorado, New mexico, ending up doing the three sisters in west Tx and heading home sunday. This will be my first Sturgis experience and I'm not riding all that way to see concerts. I want the ride back to be the experience.

Been three times. Best and cheapest way to camp is in someones yard in Sturgis. Most folks will rent you a spot from $25 and up per night depending on how close to main street they are. Rolled in all three years with no reservations and had no problem finding a place. Works out well cause you can walk to the bars and avoid all the hired guns police they bring in for the rally.

I've been twice and always stayed in the Custer/Hill City/Rapid City areas. Being that far out from Sturgis is still crazy packed. You will see nothing but bikes in about a 2 hour radius from Sturgis.

As far as good rides, you will find maps all over Sturgis made up just for that week with all the big destinations and how to get there. Needles Highway, The Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore/Crazy Horse, The Badlands, Devils Tower, and Custer State Park. There's probably more I'm forgetting but that's a good list to start :-)

There also great attractions in Sturgis besides all the concerts. Jason Britton shows up every year and Kenny Bartrom was there last year. They did a combined stunt show, jumps and a street show. There's also a drag strip and a hill climb with events every year.

And of course you have to check out the stuff you see on tv, Full Throttle Saloon, Buffalo Chip and etc.

You'll definitely have fun, it's some of the best street riding I've ever done up there. Just beautiful scenery! Enjoy

Like way too much. Like we're looking at $55/night/person for the broken spoke and buffalo chip, and about $55/night for a camp site for up to 4 people at the KOA's. This isn't my first time planning a trip like this, nor the first time to do a rally, just my first time at this particular location.

Here's our current proposed route for people asking about distances: http://goo.gl/maps/779pB

As far as stuff to do, we figured we'd spend about 3 days at the actual rally, I only throw in the concerts as that will be our evening activity, while the rest of those days will likely just be walking around and seeing what the rally offers. Outside of those 3 days, I fully expect to spend the rest doing mostly riding/exploring around state/national parks.
