Bike not started in about a year

A friend of mines bike was stolen and it was recovered, we need to replace some basic parts which we are comfortable doing ourselves. My main concern is that it hasn't been started in about a year, are there any potential engines issues that might arise? I'm thinking things like oil just sitting for a year and other fluids. Does there need to be any engine work done because that is not something we are comfortable with. It is an 02 r6 with about 3000 miles. From what we can see its going to cost around $1000 to replace some parts and cosmetics. Would it be better to sell or try and fix? Any advice with this type of situation would be appreciated.

Carbs will probably be gummed up and need a good cleaning.

Like above, clean the carbs and put new oil in and see where you stand. Sitting for a year won't do serious damage but plenty could have happened while the idiot bike thief had it.

Make sure you drain and flush the tank; whatever gas is left will be really nasty. Also, look inside the tank and see how rusted it is. If it's bad, you have more work to do.
