I may recruit you for some lessons. Kids always take advice from other coaches instead of dad. Could be the exact same advice but they listen.
You are have your head screwed on straight.

So much truth there. When i finished building my bike and went to katy to check it out for the first time.. Rob and a few guys were there.
My wife was watching and everything went fine for a bit.. but as I got used to the bike and my confidence began building, I began to push it a bit... sure enough I lost it in turn 2... got up and jumped on and took off.. Rob was standing by my wife talking to her when it happened, later she told me that when I went down and got up and got after it, Rob told her that Yep, I was in. I crashed twice that day and a few weeks later was in my first race.
Crashing seems to be part of racing and something you have to be willing to put up with.
I am thinking that YOU might have a harder time with him crashing that he will. Lets see how YOU react when he goes down.

Obed, you are absolutely correct.
I'm just hopeful that my son does like it because that gives us some common ground to play on! I want to be able to see my son out ride me!

your son will eventually out ride you...
he will get his handed to him a few times in TMGP while he is learning.. in his age group there are a couple/three really fast kids...they are his age but have been racing for 3 years already... once he gets the hang of things he will get fast quick.
One of the fastest kids out there is only 8... his main issue right now is in tight corners in heavy traffic, he has not yet figures out the passing and being passed thing.

I plan on taking him to practice for a while without racing so that he can get a feel for riding asphalt before I add in the actual race component.

BTW, what gearing are people running on the XR100's? Stock or taller gearing?
While I am waiting on the front wheel, I may as well address some of the little things.

i would say dont worry about the gearing yet, just let him ride it like it is with the road rubber, and if you wanna go out, let me know i usually go to practice every monday or wednesday, or like this week, i went, Sunday, monday, Wednesday.
