Crazy Race Idea

So I have been thinking it would be awesome to have a 24 hour 250 endurance race. I know these haven't been done here in the states in a really long time because of the obvious dangers, but I think we can get it done.

I realize there are alot of logistics that would go into this that I haven't tackled.

1) What track is equipped for something like this? lights etc.
2) What the cost to rent the track for this event is?
3) Paramedic support
4) Logistics, rules, tech requirements etc.
5) Entry fees
6) Team Sizes

I really just need to gauge support of an event like this so I can get some idea of interest. The things listed above are hard to gauge cost, entry fees etc without some input from the community. So if you are really interested in something like this I am taking polite constructive input and a show of hands to determine if I should start researching this as a possibility.

It would be a blast if you were able to get a decent showing and keep costs from getting unreasonable. If nothing else take a quick peak at 24 hr lemons racing($500 cars endurance thing) for a rough idea of logistics involved in a stand alone budgetish endurance race deal. I think they even have/had one at ecr.

Make it 12 hours. Save money on lights

7:00 am to 7:00 pm in this light that we have now...

Gss is the obvious I would think for 250

Yeah that is kind of where I got the idea.
I am thinking:
1) 2 bikes per team CMRA Formula 4 rules, so you can balance maintenanance, tire changes, etc.
2) 6 person teams. Swap as you see fit.

What would you consider to be reasonable cost? Obviously the cost is directly related to the interest.

If everyone shows enough interest I will begin working on logistics, cost, and once I have all the numbers crunched to run the event I would require a deposit to secure your spot which would be applied to your race entry fee.

In 2010 the CMRA hosted a 12 hr race at ECR. That was a blast. Then Tim held a 6 hr race at GSS.

Trey, if you are serious about it, I think the best choice would be ECR. They have a lights system for nights, I think 3T did a night TD there recently.

Likewise, that track is one of the cheaper ones to rent, and has the mini and full course.

As far a pricing, you can use CMRA's per hour rate as reference, so if 50 bucks per hour, the full race would be 1200 to enter per team. I would allow a maximum of 12 members per team.

This would be very fun, but in order for people to show, you need to get sponsors for prize money, and make it fun and attractive.

Good luck if you decide to do this.

Yeah ECR is where I had in mind because I knew that 3T does night TDs there...

12 member teams would definitely keep cost down.

Absolutely. I am only on the market research phase of planning. This is more the market research before the feasibility study part of the process.

I would definitely be in. I do 24 hour races every season as a crew chief/mechanic for multiple pro sports car series. I can say the logistics are huge for us, but doing it on a limited budget(maybe setting a cap on $ for the classes), could make it affordable to everyone. The 24hrs of thunderhill is a good amateur race. Many classes racing at the same time and everything from full on professional race cars to run of the mill miatas. I would think you would need 6-8 riders per bike and handful of crew. You always need extra bodies. There are many that can't cope with endurance racing and tend to fall off or just become worthless.

I've never raced, but would love to do this. Maybe after a couple of track days under my belt I could join.

Would this require a racing license or anything like that to be on a team?

That is something I hadn't considered... Admittedly my gut says there are pros and cons to both sides of that.

1) Need a race license to participate - Greater safety for riders since everyone in theory would be more accustomed to a race environment where consistency, concentration, and calm reactions are a must.

2) Not require a race license - May have more turnout from street riders but racers would shy away from it.

I think from a liability standpoint a race license would probably be required from an organization. That being said I would expect to accept licenses from TMGP, CMRA, WERA... for those of you that are paying attention it is really cheap and great training to get a TMGP license...
