R1 refresh "build" thread

Well the R1 wasn't generating much (read any) interest over in the for sale section so I decided to do the ever so smart thing and spend more money on it, lol.

One of my neighbors is a professional painter and has a full setup in his garage at home so I talked him into doing a lot of work for a great price.

Before the teardown:

20130524 234503 zps2c6e7c19

20130524 234452 zps54425fd0

20130524 234531 zps4962fd57

20130524 234522 zpsfd0257a7

Among other things that needed to be done:

-Refinish and clear headlights
-paint all new fairings
-repair cracks on original nose fairing
-repair and clear scratched CF bits

Here's after some teardown to pull the bits that are getting refinished from the old fairing set

976048 10103201417650240 227432810 o

And here's some shots from visiting my parts today:

20130606 153717 zps52debc5f

20130606 153837 zps30223459

Hoping to have a lot of my parts back tomorrow and the last few in a couple more days. Then I get to put it all back together!

Also bought a power commander off the R1 forums to clear up the hesitation issue I've been fighting since I bought the bike.

More soon!

I dropped by to see how things were going on my way back from lunch today. A few pieces were finished so I picked them up and they look AMAZING. I was on the fence about if I had made the right decision to have the carbon pieces re-cleared but after picking them up so am SO glad I paid the money. They look like liquid . You get used to looking at something dull and scuffed and forget just how good it looks all finished out.

Here's all the bits I have so far:

20130610 124634 zpsbe5b67ad

Still waiting on a couple more of the side fairings, both tail fairings, the headlight nose, the headlights (getting them sprayed in clear and buffed), and the tank. He also requested I put it all together and bring it over for some final buffing when the parts are hard mounted instead of floppy free plastic so it will look even better when its all said and done.

I see an escalation of commitment coming in my future... the parts are going to look so good I'm going to have to clean up and refinish other bits to match!

I bought a complete fairing set off of ebay, mostly because it was cheaper to spend $300 to get a tank along with a lot of fairings than it was to individually buy the ones I actually needed AND a tank. Since I had the parts and it wasn't all that expensive, I decided to have the extras painted to match in case I ever break something and need it, or decide that I don't like how the carbon looks.

By the time I'm done I will have two noses (one for headlights and mirrors and one "race style" modified stock without holes), two tail fairings (one race, one stock), and two front fenders (one carbon fiber and one stock).

Depending on what happens with the bike will determine what I do with the extra parts. If I decide to sell it, it'll go back to stock and I'll sell off the CF and race bits on the R1 forums. If I keep it I'll probably shelve the parts for spares in case I ever lay her down and need to replace something.

So I didn't realize that the guy that glassed in the headlights on the "race" nose was a moron and didn't consider that the nose mounts from... wait for it... the headlights and the mirrors. Yeah, the parts that are now not used.

With that found out I couldn't put the bike back together until the headlight nose showed up since I didn't feel like fabricating brackets just yet.

But that's all done now. And this is what my garage looks like...

Hoping for time to put it together this weekend!

One of my other toys. ~275RWHP miata. Its been on stands for years now as I've slowly worked my way through a complete refresh of the turbo system. Hoping to get it back on the road in 2013.

:/ One of the things I wanted to avoid was it being "another white R1". Unfortunately, unlike cars, if you want to keep the functionality of a bike intact it's hard to make something truly unique. I do have a few ideas of how I'm going to give it my own touch before I'm done with it.

Post some pics of yours!

What color are you going with? I had thought about doing gold wheels at one point but I honestly like it so much in black that I don't really want to risk changing it.

i want ducati red wheels, but it's a little too flashy for me. i've settled on white lips and keeping the black spokes.

I like it mang! Digging the white, its becoming one of my favorite colors. Needs some accent on the wheels to some how tie it together IMO.
