If 17K, I'd check valves unless you have documentation of them being done recently.

how much did your friend pay for it? its nice. Sv650's rock. I have one. The color is nice too even, looks aftermarket because i dont think they offered it in that color. it appears im about as tall as you as thats how i have to sit when im on the bike, you get used to it after a while although it does have a rather high seat height, even the "S" model isnt any lower.

Also the bars are easy to replace if you find a new bar thats of similar size you wont even need to get different cables. You can get clubman bars which are popular for the nakeds for like 25 bucks if im not mistaken, they make "clip-on style" handle-bars for the bike as well.
