catastrophic engine failure

Oh what a day.
Was riding in 290 to 1960 to finish engine rebuild on the buell blast; split cases and pressed in a new crank day before, when right at 1960 exit while in left hand lane BANG! dead bike, live bike, dead bike, live bike, dead bike and barely made it to right hand should without getting run over.

Though I blew a head gasket even though was only doing 70 and hadnt even been near rev limit or really racing the motor that ride there. Tried to start it and the most horrible of noises. Was hoping I could limp the 3 lights down 1960 to Pete's shop but obviously not. Called Pete and got trailered to the shop. Just pushing it in neutral it sounds horrible.

No clue yet but I'm expecting broken rod, piston, probably valves and jug. Soooo complete engine rebuild. She must have known I was touching another woman and got jealous.

Spent the day silently crying while putting the baby buell back together. Installed piston, jug, head, rocker box, rebuild frame around engine and she's 90% done except to drop the primary cover on, install spark plug, oil/filter, do the timing and test ride. Oh and the primary pulley nut that is going to take a week to get... YAY.

me.

Sorry, should have bought a Honda. J/k. If it makes you feel better my BMW crapped out on me today. I got 207,856.05 miles out of her though.

I feel you man. I have to resplit my case and replace my timing chain after putting everything back together. I suspect my timing chain is stretched to . I'm hoping I didn't trash my new pistons and rings.

Best part is I had just dopped 1k fixing everything around the engine. lol. I kept telling people it's got to be next... Atleast I'll have the 500cc to put around on while I rebuild the xb motor. Guess it's time to do a big bore kit and take it to 1250, go straight from stage 1 to 3, lol. I haven't cried yet, but I will. Probably while stuck in traffic on the 500. Plus I feel better having done a complete rebuild on the 500 first. I have 2 500cc motors so I really didnt care if I one up...I had spares.

Pete kept saying..."do you want to ride it or work on it... it's a buell"...

It is lawn mower simple motor but I am getting tired of dirty hands. Next bike will be a metric and the xb12 will the for special occasions.

32K miles. Had just changed the oil and primary fluid, checked primary tension. It sounds like a broken rear piston.

What year is your 12r? I know you can get the "race" oil pump gear which became standard after 07 I believe. The oil gear and crank bearings on a short run on european models are the only issues I've read about. I'll be if I open her up and the oil pump gear sheared off. No oil pressure light came on.. so.. who knows at this point.

My buddy's got a blast in the fs section. Cheap. Make for a good spare engine with real low miles.

I already have a blast and a spare engine for it. Just rebuilt it yesterday.

Not so bad, so far.

Got bike stripped down and engine dropped. Yup, clearly a blown rear head gasket. Found my source of metal crunching, main drive pulley bearings are gone. Interesting that I just changed the belt a few weeks back it felt fine. Tranny shaft is so loose you could shim it with quarters. Hopefully it's just the bearings and the bushings are fine. Either way, "easy" fix. Still haven't split cases to see what the total damage is. I'm expecting a few gear cogs need replacing as well. Cheaper than crank issues for sure.

Engine is in pieces and parts cleaned except for case splitting. 4 stuck bolts on the rear engine mount holding it together. Of course. Heat, PB, impact. None would break those suckers. Le Googlie time.

Good news. Heads, valves, pistons, rods, rings, jugs, crank, clutch basket, primary all look great. Stator was covered in fine magnet goo from the metal shavings grinding between the stator and primary. Stator is going to be replaced just in case.

So it this point till I can get her split it seems like obliterated bearings in the tranny. I just hope the case isnt scored...
