riding home from work down Kirby yesterday a guy on a Road Bicycle(Specialized good brand) lane split right through the middle of traffic. at a red light he proceeded to "lane filter" to the front and even ran the light when the opportunity came. this was during 5pm rush hour traffic on a major street, I wanted to follow his example!

Yep to this. Screw them long lines. I don't on the highway.

I do it on the hwy if it isn't barely moving. I don't filter to the front at reds, but as soon as I see the light turn green I split up past all the cars.

Screw that - once they start moving I slip back in. I filter at lights all the time on Westpark and Fountain View, and split fairly regularly on 610. The way I see it, common sense dictates.

If you aren't comfortable with it, don't split.
If you don't fit, don't split.
When traffic patterns are dicey, don't split.
If your bike handles like a shopping cart, don't split.

We need a pole. Who has received a ticket for lane splitting? Somebody post it up, this would be interesting to know.

+1 I don't know how to set up a poll post.
  • I split/filter all the time (safely)
  • I never lane split/filter
  • If it became legal I would
  • I use to but I - A.) got a ticket B.)had an accident while doing it

You forgot one

They tried to pull you over, but you were splitting. By the time you realized it you were already way ahead of traffic.

Someone told me it is not illegal to ride the shoulder lane around traffic. Anyone confirm this?

A cop, judge, and DA told me otherwise. Plus that feels way more dangerous cause cars can dart out real quick. If traffic is backed up and nit moving there usually isnt a lot of lane changing. Thats my preference.

If a bike can do, why can't an 18 wheeler as long as it fits

Dont know where bikers get the notion that somehow because bikes are smaller they don't have to abide by the same laws as other motor vehicles

So do 18 wheeler drivers, and they spend more then a weekend learning to drive

And it's an M endorsement, don't think you can have ONLY a bike license vs car license w bike endorsement.
