Brown Titled bike?

Does this typically mean a copy of a title? I'm looking at a bike with a brown title and it's about a 3 hour drive one way and I don't want to waste my time.

He says it says "certified copy" at the top and it came from the previous seller that way. He also said that the title is in his name. If he transferred the title from previous owner to himself, wouldn't his new title be blue?

Either way, having my mother in law run the VIN through DPS system before making the haul. Just curious if anyone has ever seen this before. And before people get pissy, I searched "brown title" and came up empty.

i see....I read somewhere about switch and baiting titles with those loan shark places....original owner files for lost, uses blue to obtain said loan and then burns the loan store when he gets the new brown copy title. I guess with a clean VIN check through my in laws and the names matching his DL I will feel better about it. I just don't want to get burned.

check your pm's tim.

My bike came with a "brown" title. All clean & no worries. Pretty sure it even says on there that if the owner ever finds the original he/she has to give it to you. I took the certified copy when I registered the bike and got a crisp blue one in the mail.

Thanks Tim...it's not a done deal because I haven't seen the right side of the bike, but the owner is somewhat older and seems legit....he keeps calling me partner.

If not this one, I will find one. I'm determined not to buy another bike unless it's what I really want. I put close to 30k on that 94 in 3 years (and Mudbug put another 40k on it)....it was such a comfy ride and solid....and you've seen my thread about my itch, I just love the look of older bikes (I like this front end better than the round headlights though).

Thanks bud....I really want the orange scheme, but I'll settle for a low mileage bike in kawi green.

This is what has me confused. He says seller sold it with a brown title to him. He also said the title is in his name. One would think it would be blue when re-issued. Need to figure out why it is brown....actually, really need to run the VIN (still waiting to get that to ensure there are no other liens or some sort of declaration on the title).

Sweet looking bike! Hope it all turns out well for you. Danny, is that a 98 yr model by any chance?

certified copy is exactly as it says, although the issues brought up in this thread do not leave you fool-proof. that being said just get it changed over immediatley and you'll have no problems.

Yeah when I lost a title to a Jeep I had I went to the title office and 3 hours later and $7.50 shorter and I had a brown title. Completely legitimate as a blue title in every way. Essentially a copy.
