University of Houston Riders

Never have met any of you, but this affects all of us who ride to the Univeristy of Houston Main Campus. Heads up, they are changing the price from FREE to $50 dollars for parking your bike next year!

I just recieved an email from the Parking Department and at the bottom it states "The listed rates are proposed and are awaiting final approval by the UH Board of Regents."

I have replied to the email and intend on getting to the bottom of WHY they would charge for something they have NEVER done so. Maybe if enough of us complain and provide sound reason, they might re-consider.

I understand generating revenue, but how do we as riders benefit from having to pay? The reason of charging cars to park is to keep unwanted cars out/rewarding those who pay certain amounts with better parking, etc. That's not the case with the ample bike parking situation and I just see it as a crooked way to get revenue.

+1. Please the board members out. The spots are not well kept. If I am to pay $50 to park there for a year. I better get my name on that . If someone else parks in my spot. I will drag their bike out of there and drop it on its side and walk away. Teach you to try and steal my spot!

If we are talking about the parking in fornt of S&R 1, well that was always a sweet place. Guessing it got to full and was clogging up the breezeway trunaround.

Anyway, nail some hot university tail for me.

We will win

This will not fly..............
Just bought a bike for commuting, to save gas and MONEY on parking.
This new fee defeats that entire purchase.
We will win this battle.

I've loved the free parking.... but I also never understood why it's free... I guess it takes less space from the school, so it's some incentive to ride.

I also never knew why we had to get a sticker... since it's free.

I've wondered if it was free because they felt it was a 2nd vehicle. Maybe they know people like me just quit buying the car sticker and ride daily. They do have a LOT of moto parking.

I'll complain just for the sake of it.

Good luck, but they see cash.

If it cost $50 this year, expect to pay $75 next year.

I went there for 7 years.

Imo, you rbest bet is to file suit. Find a reason why they can't if there is one, or have a lawyer do it. In the end, paying the parking will be cheaper.

It's a good thing that you brought this up to the community. I ride to UH also and the free parking is definitely a perk.

I just sent an email to the UH parking to voice our opinion and find out how we can appeal this to try and get this removed. I encourage everyone to do the same and try to voice their opinion and if necessary, we can try our best to get the support of the motorcyclists at the school and maybe we can get this free parking for us back for motorcycles!

These .... I'll just park on the sidewalk then and wait till they give me a ticket.... will end up being cheaper in the end if I only get 4 tickets.

I just sent them an E-mail regarding the issue.

I ride maybe 1 or 2 days out of the week and no way I am paying $50 ON TOP of the $300 I pay per year for parking. The college is bullshit with their fees.

What's REALLY bullshit is how is this going to work? A sticker like usual?
What if I want to ride my second bike to school? I bet these bastards will make me buy a second sticker!

So, what are your arguments for not wanting to pay. I mean, everyone wants stuff free... but what argument are you using that will appeal to THEM?

Here's one, the 2nd vehicle approach... better parking availabilty for everyone if you ride on any day versus parking....

Yes, sticker, just like car and bike are now. Or Do they have moveable tags? Mine have always been sticker on the window (economy pass) or sticker on the bike; though I didn't buy a car sticker this year... rode most days and parked on the street the few days I drove.

Moto.... sticker on magnet, on bike, but ssshhhh Sits nicely on the tank right behind the triple.

Moto parking isn't overflowing (like i remember back in 2002-2004), but it's also a lot more spots and more spread out. Maybe they are anticipating too many bikes for the spots they have with recent trends? $$$ is the way to limit it?

Not a BAD idea... but doesn't necessarily appeal directly to them
and
Mythbusters busted that

edit: more fuel efficient, but polluted more too.

Not all riders will be riding out every day of the week. Especially those that have to carry multiple things throughout the day or have many errands etc.

People will have to commute through a vehicle for many reasons on days of good weather which will translate into more parking costs for the student.

As students that already pay for a normal parking pass, regardless of whether or not we pay for a normal commuter parking pass, on days of bad weather, we will have to go out there and pay for parking on those days regardless for guest parking etc. Because we will not be able to ride out :(
