I ride with tunes more often than not, especially for long rides. I've tried earbuds and in-helmet speakers but now I use these:

www.plugup.com

They're pricey, but by far the best option I've found. They are effective earplugs if you don't want music. If you are listening to music then they allow you to keep the volume down remarkably low while still hearing the music clearly. With earbuds/helmet speakers I'd have to max the volume to hear anything at all at 70 mph. They basically pipe music directly into your ear canal. With the volume at a manageable level I can still hear emergency vehicles/horns and such. I've also heard good things about the Sony ER6's.

I used just a regluar Rio mp3 player and I also used my 30gig video ipod. No problems with either....trying to decide if i'm going to bring one with me on Friday.

I use a sony ericsson K750i and it sucks to use the headphones I have now. I'll have to look for an alternative in headphones. It does distract me but not to the point of not knowing my surroundings and such. Its a shame it was raining today, i wanted to try that out again but at full volume.

I use an ipod, I place it in my inner jacket pocket with the face facing outwards. I can see the shape of the ipod directly in my sideview mirror so I operate it that way. I have the stock headphones.. they suck and fall out if I try to adjust my helmt so the music is not very loud. I can still hear cars and the road.

i have the 30gig ipod video black.. works perfect for me i have a belt clip and a armband for it right now i used the sony headphones that wrap around your ear and have a speaker that fits right into your ear or some other ones with some foam that form to your ear and they block out alot of sound plus you can hear your music really good. but the ipod is easy for me to use with or without gloves its really not the mp3 player you use when you have gloves on its if you can remember where the buttons are but i always have mine on

I went out and bought a 30gig ipod video and didnt like the headset that came with them, everytime i took my helmet off they hurt my ears, so i purchased some in ear ones. I got them at circuit city http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sennh...oductDetail.do. They are the smallest ones i found and the sound quality is great. No clipping at higher volumes. And man let me tell you, i dont go anywhere without them now. Even if im not listenng to music i still use the headset cause they block out noise. Helps alot

yup yup... ipod mini loaded with techno, eminem, atmosphere, linkin park, slayer, megadeath, and ozzy. (good variety.. takes me from chill to spirited to ball to the wall and back down for a cool down. i have them organized on a playlist that is about 45 min long. haha) but replaced ear buds with some kick pieces from Sony that stay in and are loud as .

didnt like it the first time i did it and i still dont do it if i'm riding with traffic. but for the out in the middle of no where rides just find some better earphones.

You know me Roger, I've been listening to my Ipod for a while. Not so much lately. just like everyone else has posted. Listening to music gets me going which is a good and bad thing. I dont put the volume up too loud so I can still hear whats going on around me. But I've had the most close calls while having my music playing. It could be argued as being a distraction. At the same time I have more fun while having them on.

Maybe it's just me but I find the wind noise is pretty loud so to listen to music I have to turn it up. Then when I stop it seems really loud.
Seems like the wind noise and the loud music together would be bad for your hearing. Thats why I stopped listening on the bike. Plus I have learned to like the stuff going on in my head when I have a little time to myself.

Yeah i know you jam your music but i differ in that im just as aware of my surroundings listening to my ipod than not. It really helps with those long rides or even cruising to your house. Now i never go anywhere without them
