Kawi Reliability

I saw this bike on CL and its an 07 kawi with 8100 miles. I have been reading up on the 07/08 zx6r and some say to avoid it and it has had the recall on the gaskets. Also something about the kawi tick in/on the cam chain tensioner I know every bike has its lemons but overall do you think 07/08 kawi should be avoided? I need a reliable bike because I plan on purchasing for my main method of transportation and dont need to be stranded somewhere. (still have a car, but like the mpg of bikes). Thanks

You hear about the CCT going out on a lot of bikes, but it's a simple cheap replacement with a manual one you can keep up to spec yourself. I would think a Kawi would be reliable if taken care of, even though I'm partial to Honda's all bikes are rock solid.

I know two guys with early 2000 ZRX's with 70 and 95k miles on them, and they run like champs. Just make sure the bike has been well taken care of. I think looking at the chain is one good indicator, if the person takes time to keep the chain lubed and clean it's likely they kept other things in good shape. It's nice if they have a service history, but with only 8k miles there isn't much in the way of service besides an oil change.

It's usually obvious if they have taken care of the bike or not. Look at the chain, sprockets, push the front suspension down and look for fork seal leakage. Listen to the bike start and idle, make sure the bike starts well from being cold. Sometimes owners will warm a bike up if they know it has an issue with cold starts before an owner gets there, so feel the engine before starting it to see if they have warmed it up before letting you hear it run.

The 07/08s are good bikes, but really don't come alive until after 8k. They get a bad rap for being ugly and yes- for a valve cover gasket leak.. its a pretty minor deal, and if it hasnt happened in the first 7k miles your fine.

It's a good idea to change out any OEM CCT with a manual one.

I've owned several 07/08s- with some minor tweaking they can be track monsters.. and as long as you don't overfill them by a pint of oil, or leave the motor sitting for a few years, they dont leak either.

I owned an 08' zx6r and it ran like a champ...they had a recall on the gaskets that were changed for free at the dealer. It was a bit sluggish under 8k rpm but after that I ate up gixxer 6's and hondas alike. I totaled mine last year and I have a zx10r now and I will definitely be looking to get another zx6r

I'd prefer a Honda or Yamaha over a Kawasaki. I'd even lower to Suzuki before the green machine. I'm sure they are fine bikes, I just like the other brands better.

I would like to thank everyone for their responses, i know i have been asking a lot of questions lately, just want to be sure im not getting screwed. I ended up buying an 09 zx6r. I get it today
Also while i was at the shop they too had an 07 zx6r and when they started it there was a little white smoke. Im not sure if its water being burned off or theirs a head gasket problem(was not thick but noticeable). It was not a constant white smoke but would come out a little if you reved it. Also you could not rev the bike it would bogg down a bit right after start up. After it warmed up could rev it, still want to be sure as a friend of mine was considering getting it. I dont want him to get screwed either. It really sucks buying used, never know what you are buying.

You bought an awesome bike.
the 09 was a total redesign and was the 600 class leader for two years and is a very potent bike.

TAKE YOUR BIKE TO MOTORCYCLES UNLIMITED AND GET YOU SUSPENSION SET UP!

As for Kawasaki's, I have owned many and no worry....your kawi will work great!

Tell me about it. I did research on my ZRX and found nothing but praises for it. People getting 35k, 50k, 80k miles etc.

Apparently, the bike had a small weak point which I didnt find til later, when the engine exploded.

Props for you for finding the weakness of that particular model.
