I've known a man who got ten years for killing his best friend in a drunk driving accident. I don't know who you're talking about.

Drunk driver walks away, victim loses their life.

How many times have you driven drunk? I would be unlikely to believe that there are many who haven't. When you DID get in your car and drive after a few drinks, were you intending to get into an accident and kill somebody? My guess is no. It's not murder; it's manslaughter.

How many accidents happen every day when the person isn't drunk? How many die then? They don't get punished, because it's an accident. Nobody gets in an accident on purpose - that's why it's called an accident. Oh, how quick we are to judge.

If you're so wasted that you drive the wrong way down the highway, I doubt you were in any state of capable decision making. It's unfortunate that this happened. People die everyday. Some die at the hands of drunk drivers, most don't. It happens. It's life. I think ten years was plenty of time for killing his best friend - it will live with him forever.

And, yes, I have lost family members to drunk drivers. I have been affected. I don't drink more than two drinks if I am out and know I'm going to have to drive - now. I guess it's part of growing up. I hope that I can teach my kids about drinking and driving without them having to learn first hand of the consequences. They, too have already lost friends to drunk driving, but I'm not sure it's the same as deciding to get behind the wheel when you've been drinking.

Those are just the ones we hear about. I'm quite certain drunk drivers die as often as they kill.

I don't typically trust statistics, but I know people die on the roads everyday. This young woman will be punished and she will serve time. Her life is permanently ruined. And it won't fix what she did.

Was this the one that killed Max and Emily? If so, I didn't know them, but I have friends that knew them pretty well.

Either way, you have my condolences.

Drunk drivers typically survive because during the crash their body is relaxed at the time it happens. The sober person who sees the crash happen is more likely to die because they are bracing for impact and putting their bodies into a tense state causing more harm than good. It sounds illogical, but the fact is that a rag-dolled body is going to absorb impact better than a tense one.
