79 XS 650

.....and so it begins.

I bought this quite by accident after drinking too much and surfing Ebay. C'mon, we've all done it.

Bone stock 1979 Yamaha XS 650 "Special"

Plan is to keep the chassis basically stock, just cut off the unneeded tabs, brackets, etc.

Powder coat the wheels all black.

Crinkle coat the engine cases.

Strip the paint on the tank.

Install some flat bars.

Tone down the seat.

Ridiculous open pipe set up, aptly named "ya mama"

After this is all done, I will sit back and see what else needs to be done. It could either look really cool or like a bucket of . If it does look like , I will just sell it to Mongo...........he'll buy anything.

Pictures reflect how it looked in Minnesota when listed on Ebay.

How it sits now

Ripped some bits off. Scootertrash is going to PC them for me.

Ordered loads of stuff from Pandemonium Choppers and Mikes XS.

Next order of business is to start grinding off tabs, etc.

Time to mock up a seat pan with cardboard and see where that goes.

And so it begins. When done right those 650s looks awesome. So do it right. There is a guy on Airline that does cafe style seats for pretty cheap if it doesn't turn out the way you want.

I need to bring the Triumph by and check it out. Haven't done much yet. Exhaust, flat track style bars, and removed a bunch of it doesn't need. Wheels and fenders are next.

Would like the bloke's number as I need someone to do the upholstery anyway after I've made the pan.

Ready for PC

Removed the tyres yesterday. Boxed up and ready to take up to Cut and Shoot, TX so Tim can make them look pretty.

I was going to have the cases done with the black crinkle finish until someone said "oh, just like the Harleys." I didn't realise that is what they used, so it is going good old satin black.

Bits to be done:

Engine side covers
Tappet covers
Oil filter cover
Generator cover

The engine should look ok once it goes back together. I ordered all new engine fasteners and case bolts in a kit from Mike's XS. Bits for this machine a plentiful and cheap. By the time I'm finished, I hope to have less than $2500 in it which includes the $1300 for the bike with shipping.

IMHO opinion you might recinsider PC'ing the engine covers. I think they look best in a lightly polished finish.
Not polished out so they look like chrome but just a little shine.

I'll try to post up a pic of my 650 to show you what I mean...

This is going to be cool. What color will you be going for on the tank? Bare metal cleared would be cool.

Bumblebee, I'd love to see pics. I thought about the side covers long and hard. There are a few bikes on xs650.com that got my attention.
