It's a bit far from work, but I'll try to make it if time allows.

The biggest hurdle I see with any large organized ride - not just yours, Frank - is that too many riders don't treat it like a GROUP ride. If a rider wants to ride as fast as he/she feels like, then DON'T go to a group ride. When you ride in a group, by definition you agree to ride with constraints that must apply to every rider in that group. Otherwise, it's just a bunch of bikes that happen to be on the same road.

There are two sides of this same coin. You have guys that put themselves in a group that is too fast for their ability. When that happens: they either drag the pace down, or they ride past their limits. Either is bad, but the latter carries deadly consequences. Then you have riders that get impatient with the prevailing group pace, then break ranks and disrupts the GROUP's cohesiveness.

You can assign sweepers and count heads all you want, but until the above root causes are addressed and these group rides start to behave as GROUP RIDES, these additional counter-measures are only gonna catch the aftermath of the inevitable.

Hey Volfy hope you can make it, i always enjoy your way of looking at things, and i completely agree with your statement, it is a group activity and everyone should be on the same page for the good of the group, be a team player and respect all the rules and exercise common sense.

I want to make this but I've got to be up early Saturday for an 8 hour ride.

Let me just say this:

When unfamiliar faces show up to a ride, there must be a rider's meeting to go over the ride rules and get everyone on the same page.

Don't ride faster than you would if you were riding alone.

Peace

Thanks everyone for your input, lots of great ideas mentioned here, we will talk about the options tonight and hopefully come up with a new set of rules that will help our SMRs be a lot safer for everyone.

did y'all invite any LEO from the areas the rides go thru?
or EMT's to discuss safety concerns if somebody does go down?

i did invite a few HPD officers that i ride with sometimes but since we will be talking about route options, i dont think it would be a good idea to inform them where we are riding to next

they are not going to know exactly when you are going to ride... and after all these years they already know where the routes are... and they also know that no matter what they do, folks ARE going to ride...and hopefully they want safety more than anything else...so getting their input on safety only makes sense...glad you invited some... now it is up to them to decide if they want to provide any input... and if there are any emt's available, a little instruction from them on what to and what NOT to do in the event of a bad off, would be valuable.
