i've heard it pronounced lot's of different ways but never that way.
i went to school with a Dainese and he pronounced it, Duh-nee-see and so have i been.

English is so mongreled with French and other influences that there are more pronunciation exceptions than there are rules. Most, if not all, of the romantic languages pronounce "e" as the short vowel "eh". Not the long vowel "ee" as in English. And certainly not the long compound vowel "ay", which the American poor attempt at mimicking the short "eh".

That said, as far as languages go, "usage" trumps "convention". If enough people say it the wrong way, then the wrong way might eventually become the right way. That's how English become so f'ed up the way it is.
