I just did the IHS conference and one of the rooms I ran covered the cost of plastics vs metal vs carbon in vehicle construction. CF is 460Xs more expensive to produce currently but you will see it drop to the same manufacturing cost of plastics in the next few years. They also covered the big safety issue with CF is that the semi random nature of the fiber alignment makes it nearly impossible to establish strength standards currently.

How can they use it on airplanes if they can't establish strength standards?

That would make the AGV smaller wouldn't it? I mean if you have to run XXL on AGV then a Large one would be to small for you right?. . . Am I wrong on that one?

Ah ha! They covered this! lol. CF used for planes is a WHOLE different process and regulations as compare to the automotive industry. Hence why planes cost so much. The presenter said he would not be flying on the new Dreamliner for many many many years until long term stress tests have been done.

Example: You can get CF bike parts from china on ebay for 100th the cost as compared to name brand CF parts. Think they are the same in strength and quality as the name brand parts?

Wow that is a serious process to produce a helmet. Amazed at the level of hands on labor it takes.
