What do you want out of a sumo? If you want something you can get on the track with I'd recommend converting a 450 (which you can use the wheels you already bought for most likely by swapping hubs over).

If you want something street-only and reliable look for something like a big bored DRZ, KTM 690 / 625, Husky 610sm, etc. All of these have USD forks and weigh less (the DRZ is pushing it probably) than the XR. The 690 especially is fantastic. Huge power but rare and somewhat pricey.

Personally I think you can have more fun on a smaller bike than a 650R and all of the other sumo options look much sexier in my opinion. You're probably going to lose money no matter what you do. I'd look at what you could reasonably get for parting it out vs. how much a new bike will cost. If you can at least finance a new bike with the part sales it eases the pain a bit.

Dude.

I got to the point with my KTM SMR450, that it took one little item to fail to cause me to bail on it. I was just done.

I don't regret walking away, but I do miss my tard.

You will know when it's time.

You WILL lose money you will NEVER get back on almost any motard...ALWAYS. But it's still worth it.

EDIT: I will get another...just sayin...

Bottom line is, do you plan to replace it with something else, and how much will the new one cost?

Now those dollars and cents for the rebuild might not look so bad?

this is a great answer. Although you may have a lot of cool goodies on it, it doesnt mean anything to you like it used to or you wouldnt of asked that question.
Maybe it is time to part it out, cut the losses and get a new love to play with. You will be more excited with a new toy.
When this happens to me, I just push it to the back corner and let it sit, kinda teach it a lesson or two, and yes, me too.
I'll get interested again, might be a few years, but when I do, she will be there in the dusty corner ready to live again.
I have all kinds of toys like this waiting for me to come around again.
Right now I'm working on a big block dodge powered 62 comet gasser

That's what chicks DO. If you don't give them reason for the hairy eyeball they'll just conjure up anyway, and their imagination usually involves strippers. So just keep the moto.

If you wanted and/or could keep it, you would have already ordered the parts.

When I lost piston #8 in my current project over christmas, I tore it down, verified the problem and it was at the machine shop the following week. Forged motor on the way.

It wasn't a question of if......just how much and when.

, you're not that far into it, at least the cases survived.

Every time the 450 goes, we've got to buy a donor bike for a new motor.
