i lane split here in texas, but ONLY when i deem it worth the risk. ie: gridlock, bumper to bumper etc. as a rider everything we do has a good deal of risk associated with it. risk management/assessment is the name of the game. my wreck proved that you can be doing everything "right" and a cager can swoop in and your day up, with out warning.

I prefer to just ride the line on the shoulder. I don't have a choice. My bike will overheat if I stop for too long in the summer.

Man, don't you know how hard it is to put on your makeup, text a friend, take pictures, hold your latte, change the radio station, yell at the kids AND pay attention to traffic?

I'd like it to be legalized as well but I fear uneducated cagers who WILL get off at seeing lane splitting bikes.

Those that are not in favor simply don't know what they are talking about.

Lane splitting gives a rider as much control of a situation as possible and a riders awareness is increased considerably. It is also efficient. A single rider can reduce congestion by a huge factor. Here is a video of an unknown Houston rider lane splitting on 610. There are personal rules each rider must take responsibility to give themselves or they might get caught up.

I say it should not be illegal and I'm glad it is not in Texas.
There is simply no safer way to ride.

it is illegal in Texas.

Btw, I've done my fair share of illegal lane splitting. I even lane split a HCSO Tahoe once but it wasn't marked. He lit me up but I didn't look back. My friend informed me when we got home.

No, I've done a bit of research before going to court and winning.
There is no specific law that forbids it.

Unlike Utah, where it is specifically forbidden for motirbikes , but does not mention bicycles.
Therefore it is only legal to lane split on a bicycle in Utah.

the thing that i hate is other peoples ego's endangering my life. i'm not so much worried about someone not seeing me, that's to be anticipated. what i worry most about is some deeming it necessary to put my life at risk just because he doesn't agree with the way i ride. already been in one bad accident because of that, and i'd like to avoid another.

that being said, i'll still lane split in the right situations.

they can get you for improper lane change and/or failure to maintain lane control and/or reckless driving. it's officer's discretion to cite you for anything he feels as unsafe. this usually means the "law" is open to the officer's interpretation. which also means it can be fought in court, with a reasonable chance at winning.
