I don't use the fwys for commute - but for those who do, and when I hit some traffic on the fwy, I think it should be LEGAL to lane split.

What I would suggest is to have a maximum lane splitting speed - if there is none already. Obviously, we want to be slow enough to stop when idiots don't look before they swap lanes. Obviously, a lane splitting max speed of 5mph or so is better than 0mph stuck in traffic.

check the CA code and the bills proposed for lane splitting... 5mph over existing traffic provided traffic is moving...25-30mph...along with a number other other criterias. If I recall correctly.

http://www.lntlb.com/_blog/Personal_...litting_Rules/

Quote:
The new guidance applies not just to city streets, but also to highways across California. The rules require that motorcyclists lane split at a speed of not more than 10 mph above the speed of the traffic around the motorcyclist. If the traffic around is moving at more than 30 mph, it is highly recommended that you avoid lane splitting.

I like the idea of lane splitting, but am scared of the risks associated with them.. Like Ares said, there should be some rules to lane split to minimize the risks!!

I avoid splitting, but have done it before. A lot of times people in cars are in just of a hurry as you, so in stop and go traffic a car will whip into the other lane when there's a chance. Hopefully you aren't there when they do.

With all the bad drivers, people on phones, texting, eating, and much more I would be cautious in splitting lanes, however if you follow the rules that I read +5 over, 25-30 mph or when stopped, I don't see as much risk and that is the key word RISK. You know that at some point a person in a car is not going to be happy, and pull into your lane, cut you off, open a door ect. If your willing to risk your life and others as well that is your decision. A few bad apples probably ruin it for the people that do follow the rule. IMO

With my luck I would probably try and forget about the bags sticking out another 6 inches on each side.

Definitely should be legal and wish it was in Texas.
Stop and go traffic is deadly in Texas heat and there should be some sort of offset to being on an unprotected vehicle. Creep around the traffic and keep moving.

Anyone know why it has never been legalized in Texas?

Yes!! Just like how a truck has a different speed limit on hwy from a Car. So should motos. They have different capabilities and it would help with congestion!

A news outlet using footage of illegal behavior to justify making legal behavior illegal? Say it isn't so! I cannot imagine such a thing being done.

I try to be good, but a couple weeks ago I took beltway 8 over to I-10 to avoid traffic. The beltway got closed at HWY290, and traffic was bumper to bumper for at least 10 miles. I grew up riding in California so I found a lane. I didn't speed, but creeped along at 5mph. I had a couple of trucks try and block me, but I was able to find a way around them. I support lane sharing is the closing statement.
