The owner can do it for 5 dollars. More than likely the guy selling it doesnt have a title in his name. You can do a bonded title for a few hundo, but i would be leary.

As stated above, "lost title" is typically slang for something more involved

Getting a certified copy of a title costs $2 in Texas if mailed in. No real excuse to not have a title if it's in his name unless just lazy.

Thing was that the title was not in the guy we bought it for name it was the previous owner before him!

red flags everywhere. Like has been said, it's way too easy to get a certified copy if you've lost it, so no excuse not to have one. Specially if as the owner you plan on selling it.

Your friend should have at least run the vin. It's free and on the internet. IF it came back clean then he would have had 2 options.

1. Getting ahold of the last registered owner of the bike and hope he is generous enough and kind enough to take his time and money to help you out because the dumb he sold his bike to couldn't be a responsible member of the motorcycle community and get his taken care of.

2. Again, if it comes back as not stolen, you have an option to get a bonded title. Grand total may cost you a few hundred. There's a bit of paperwork involved but it can be done. Chad (themagicman) is a bonded title guru. Since your friend bought bike without a title, he's probably going to have to go this route if he wants to legally ride it on the street. Chances of getting ahold of the registered owner of the bike and him helping out will be slim.
