Heads up on possible Volunteer effort to clean up SHNF trails

I work with one of the big wigs of Trail Riders of Houston, he was talking about a big meeting they have this weekend with the Rangers up in the Sam Houston National Forest. Main topic of discussion will be the dead trees cluttering up the trails and getting a "work day" to help clean up. The Rangers are taking a hit just like all other Goverment Agencies and dont have the man power to maintain the trail system there. Once I get a date and time I will call the power of MH to go out and help clean up the trails. This is just a heads up to get your minds rolling....

Sound off if you can volunteer

My wife thinks I am crazy for doing this; but cutting down trees and hauling them off is actually something I enjoy doing. Put me down.

We will do more hauling than cutting though. You have to take a special class to use a chain saw in a National Forest

That's fine man; I didn't think they would let us have any fun with the chain saws! Thats a good work out hauling dead lumber. Makes me feel all manly and ! I need it sitting in an office all day.

Update from this last weekends meeting with the Rangers at SHNF.

The Trail Riders of Houston have a busy schedule the next couple of months, they want to get this place cleaned up but dont want to kill thier guys' in the process.

The rangers are bringing down a guy from Minnesota to teach/certify the use of a Chainsaw in the national forest. This has to be done before they will turn us loose in the forest. Please send PM me your information (name/cell) if you have a chain saw and would like to attend this class. I dont have a date/time yet but once I find out I will update this thread.

Plan is to get at least 5 of us certified so that way we can have 5 crews go out, chop up the down trees on the trail. They are trying to make it happen soon to take advantage of the cool weather.

Most of the members in TRH now are really into the Skull Creek property. The forest has been a bit neglected. There are also members of the forest coalition that is willing to help as well.

I'm not allowed to handle sharp objects as part of my probation, but I am allowed to carry heavy . If it's on a weekend I can most likely make it. If they plan this for a weekday then I'm hosed.
