Test Ride of a DN01 - Honda's flash in the pan

Well stopped by a shop today to look at a few bikes and they had this one that stood out from all the others. I finally know what a bike looks like that has a motorcycle for a father and a scooter for a mother.

Cruising down 610, this bike elicited more looks than I could count. Granted I think I did see some one spit out their coffee, but hey if you want to follow the crowd follow the crowd.

I can tell that at a MH meet this thing would be met with snickering and laughter but hey to eaches own right.

Anyway back to the ride.
Smooth bike, engine from the transalp. Not as peppy as I would like and certainly no heritage from the transalp at all.
Comfortable oh yes.
Handling. HMMM juries out on this. I would need to take it to RR to test that out.

Would be great on a long trip for sure and two up.
Plus is driveshaft and single sided swingarm.

Anyway it was an interesting transition from a Vstrom 1000 to that.

They offered to give me 4500.00 to take it off their hands. I told them they would need to pay me 4750.00 just for the ridicule I would have to endure for a few months.

Nahhh... can't fault Honda for thinking wayyy outside the box. Much the same "WTF! who asked for this?!" can be said about the Diavel, but most don't because... well, because it's a Ducati. Even a from Ducati is a desirable . Not that I think Diavel is a , of course, but the motorcycling public weren't exactly screaming for a power cruiser from Italy.

Up until recently, Honda had been broadly criticized for staying too conservative with their designs and for producing great bikes with exceptional levels of performance and refinement, but were somewhat bland and unexciting. So Honda went wild. And they are still going wild now, to a lesser degree with the F6B and NC700X. Even the VFR1200 was a new formula between the traditional Sport Tourer (C14, FJR) and a hypersport bike (Busa, ZX14). Sometimes it's a base hit, sometimes it's a swing and a miss, but they can't knock one out of the park unless they swing.

Honda's got enough R&D muscle and deep pockets, they can afford to play around a bit.
