I believe that's a myth. If your boots take a impact that will crush steel toed boots, your toes would be hamburger meat in any footwear.

+10 on the knee pads. I find separate knee pads that strap-on (I use Joe Rocket) fit better and are more secure than the ones that just slip into my armored jeans. I ride dual sport bikes. I use Sliders Jeans and Khakis for pants from Compacc.com. They also have mesh pants. If you get mesh pants make sure they are silver not black to reduce summer heat. Sliders cost less (about $80) and have more protection than anything else I have seen. In the winter/spring/fall I wear them all day and just slip on my knee pads when going riding. However, just strapping on gear does not prevent injury.

The best defense is a good offense. I have read a several excellent books that help me develop a riding strategy that helps avoid the crash. Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well by David L. Hough (Apr 22, 2008), Ride Hard, Ride Smart: Ultimate Street Strategies for Advanced Motorcyclists by Patrick Hahn are just a few. Gear reduces injury on average 40%. Avoiding the slide all together reduces injury 100%.

I always use a full face helmet but flip up the visor when stopped. It also has a drop down sun visor (size of slightly large sunglasses) that I use when riding in town and it is very hot (leave the big visor up then).

I wear gloves all the time and mesh jackets. Sometimes under the jacket I wear FOX Titan Sport Jacket White (armor mesh enduro vest / arm protection /back brace but the mesh is not abrasion resistant). When it is VERY hot and I will be traveling under 40mph I wear just the sport jacket. Finally I like the Tour Master Solution 2.0 WP boots. I have large hip pads that I tuck into my jeans and are secured with my belt.

Yea I actually crashed in my redwings in January. The bike landed on my left ankle, and it still hurts. Now that I have a locker at work, I can leave my boots here and ride in my cortech latigo boots.

I think the thought should be more geared toward the lack of protection around the ankle. Leather is good for sliding and not getting scratched, but not when the bike falls on it. I agree with you on the toes, but the ankle will still take some impact from the bike. Riding boots (at least mine) have hard parts around the ankles.

No doubt riding boots offer the best protection, but any boot is better than sneakers

Yep, Mythbusters busted that one. I agree about ankle support though, one day I'll get some riding boots, probably used because I can't afford new ones. Maybe I can take the rails off my rollerblades and use those boots?

True... but I think the idea is that hamburger meat is better than severed.

I'll avoid both if possible.
