Anyone been to The Isle?

Well me and my buddy were bsing the other day and I brought up Isle of Man (on my bucket list) so I thought I would post here and see who all has been. Talking about going in the next couple of years and I'm in need of info and lots of it.

Are there package prices? I found trips out of Australia that are all inclusive but none out of the USA go figure. So really what I'm wanting is general knowledge about how to go about finding a place to stay that doesn't break the bank. Any info you have is more than what I have so please share. Thanks everyone.

Here's what I would do and probably will do in the near future:

Join a forum like this one: http://www.iomtt.com/forum.aspx

Ask a ton of questions, get to know the people on the forum and then make your plans.

I did something similar in 2010 when I "out of the blue" decided to go to the 24 hours of Le Mans! Have been several times since and have met friends from other countries, I still converse with to this day!

Went with Wiayeman last year ... Do it...it is a life changing event

Lodging is the hard part, we knew someone.

Hotels are hard to find, locals rent rooms or you can camp. Check out the camping, they have tent cities set up. You will have to think about booking the ferry ( from Liverpool) now. You can also fly in.

If you can afford it see if you can get a VIP packagecatbthe Crag or Grandstand. Well worth it.

The weather is totally unpredictable and changeable so pack for all 4 seasons. You can travel there really light and buy TT clothing ( you will anyway) to cover all weather when you arrive

Thanks. Good idea. I did join the forum. It does not seem to be very active though.

They never are until it gets close to race time. Fastola says 10K to go? I doubt it would be that high. I've done Le Mans 3 times and I can do the whole 2 week trip for less than 5K.

Then again, I should write a book on traveling cheap!

Spent my morning doing travel research on Isle of Man.

1. You've probably waited too late to make the 2013, but it could be done.

2. At this point, unless you want to pay a fortune, grandstand tickets are out. But never say never, I've just done some rudimentary searching. General admission tickets are still available, but your location would be a toss-up!

3. If you travel light, don't mind trains, planes and humping it. You could get on the island for roughly $1600.00. But that's from Houston.

4. Plan on camping on the island the entire trip. This is where the forums come in handy. Find a group that has been to IOMTT before and are "heavy" campers. Try to see if you can stay on their campsite and be willing to pitch in for expenses. They'll help you with the survival part of camping for a week+ (i.e..cooking, bathing, etc)

5. Plan on one night in London on the outward leg of you trip.

A trip like this should be planned at least a year in advance, if you want to save money. I would probably rely on my friends that live in the UK for some of the accommodations ( and maybe even the travel), but I'm certain I could do a 14-16 day trip for 5K or less.

Thanks for all the great advice. No I am not planning on going this year. It would be 2014-2015.
