Mayweather Jr. V. De La Hoya

Golden / Pretty Boys Look to Up PPV Numbers

OscarMayweather Main TeddyB

NEW YORK - With the MGM Grand Arena sold out in less than three hours, and sponsorship in place, the only thing left to do is to sell, sell, and sell the Pay-Per View.

Make no mistake, everything that is done from Tuesday - the kickoff of an eleven city cross-country media tour hosted by the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in midtown Manhattan - till the actual fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr., will be to pump up the buy numbers.

In one of boxing's overdue, and soon to be over-hyped matchups of all time, De La Hoya (38-4, 30 KOs) will face pound-for-pound king Mayweather (37-0, 24 KOs) May 5 in Las Vegas.

The bout will gross a record U.S. live-gate of $19 million from the ticket sales, and hopes to clear another $3 million in merchandise sales. In addition, Golden Boy said the fight will benefit from $70 million worth of marketing.

HBO and Golden Boy Promotions are hoping that records will be broken as expectations are high that this fight will generate record pay-per-view buys once the PR machine finishes touring the nation.

After Tuesday’s launch in New York, the excursion will move on to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., Wednesday; Chicago and Detroit on Thursday; Miami on Friday; Houston and Dallas on Feb. 26; San Francisco and Las Vegas on Feb. 27; and concludes in Los Angeles on Feb. 28.

To kick the tour off, the Starlight Roof ballroom in the Waldorf Astoria was set up like a room might be for Fashion Week in NYC. Video cameras were in the back, while stills were in the front, with the Media and VIP’s split by a cat-walk heading to the dais. Behind the video cameras in the back were fans, as the spectacle was open to the public.

After everyone was seated and following a brief video, wearing a zipped sweatshirt and black jeans “The Pretty Boy” made his way down the runway. After posing for pictures, a video for De La Hoya began to play. Smiling, Floyd ripped his sweatshirt off, then his black tee-shirt to pose with his ripped six-pack.

Then Oscar made his way, in his Golden Boy executive look.

A sharp suit.

As he arrived at the end of the catwalk, he saw Mayweather flexing, and uncharacteristically, Oscar quickly lost his jacket, tore his shirt out of his pants and pulled up his shirt to flaunt his own six-pack.

To help juice the HBO PPV numbers, HBO has created a four part reality program that will take the viewers into each of the fighter’s camps.

&#The show will debut after the season premiers of The Sopranos and Entourage on April 8th,” said HBO executive Ross Greenberg. “A nice real estate slot.”

Then Floyd’s advisor, Leonard Ellerbe, stepped up to the podium and trashed De La Hoya.

&#Like Oscar, Floyd has moved through the weight classes, but remained undefeated,” said Ellerbe. “Floyd has never laid down in a fight,” he continued, referring to De La Hoya’s loss to Bernard Hopkins.

Amused by the banter, Mayweather, with a huge grin, would say, “touch me here,” reaching out for five from Ellerbe.

Then he said that even though Freddie Roach has replaced Floyd Sr. as head trainer, that Roach can’t win a fight for the “Golden Boy.”

&#Just look at his last fight with (James) Toney,” said Ellerbe

Later, Mayweather Jr. would say that the $2 million that his dad demanded to be De La Hoya’s corner man was cheap.

&#He would have had him at a discount,” said Mayweather Jr.

&#Before, he had two chances to win. Slim and none. Now with my dad gone, slim left town. He has no chance,” Mayweather said.

While Mayweather was at the podium, a fan yelled, “Floyd, heart beats skill all the time.”

Quickly, Mayweather responded, “37 opponents had heart, but all came up short.”

Oscar would walk up to the podium and deliver the usual banter, however, after more of Mayweather’s trash talk, De La Hoya would return to say, "I love it. It gives me more fuel."

Then Mayweather started again.

&#He wanted Reyes gloves, and 154. I can be 130, or at 160. I’ll still beat you,” speaking directly to De La Hoya.

In the customary face-off pose, Mayweather began to touch De La Hoya on his shoulders. Then a bit more aggressively, as he began to move forward into him, while trash talking. To his credit, Oscar only chest bumped a bit, although he looked visibly disturbed by The Pretty Boy’s demeanor.

Afterwards Floyd said, “This tour is gonna end after another four cities, cause he’s gonna want out!”

Expect more antics during the tour, as the goal of the tour is to drum up interest to fuel the PPV frenzy.

It’s a Frenzy that may well eclipse the $103 million generated by the 2002 Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis fight as the most lucrative PPV event of all time.
