Got caught speeding on BW8

I left work later than usual yesterday so I was in a bit of a hurry to run home. It was already dark; I blew past a full grown bear (police SUV) southbound BW8 and didn't even notice. Well, them lights came on and I pulled to the inside median.

Anyway, I had to stand there for 10mins or so in the middle of rush hour traffic, but he let me go with a warning. Don't really know but FWIW here is what I did:

1. Be considerate to the LEO. I had my bike turned off, helmet/gloves off, and insurance paper pulled out before the LEO even got out of the car. I waited till he came up before pulling my wallet out for the license - with my wallet cheek toward him and my hands in his plain sight. Did not want to get him nervous about me reaching into my overpants. Everybody wants to go home to their family - safely.

2. Be apologetic. I told him I am sorry for him to have to pull me over in the middle of 8 lanes of hwy traffic. It was stupid of me to speed but I just wanted to go home. and not miss dinner with my family.

3. Come across as a good rider and law-abiding citizen otherwise. Not only was my bike sporting a dorky top case, it is probably the only SV in Houston that still has the stock rear fender/reflectors - license plate well lit with bright LED, with current inspection sticker right under it. My bike was washed clean; tires nearly new. I was in full riding regalia - leather long jacket, textile overpants, and steel toe cowboy boots. Glasses on - per my license restriction.

4. Seeing that I have CHL, he asked if I was carrying. I answered no, I typically do not on a bike. Just having CHL tells the LEO that this rider has passed criminal and background checks.

I thanked him again. He told me to go with the traffic flow or at the speed limit, but not over, and don't speed just because I'm on a bike. Then he drove off. I was polite; he was professional. Everybody went home happy.

Maybe I should carry my CHL too. Generally don't have it with me unless I'm carrying.

The cops I know want to see the CHL when they stop you. If it comes down to the computer telling them that you have one, they arent too happy.

cuong-nutz posted he doesn't carry the license unless he's armed. Yea, if you're carrying you should announce it, first thing

I always turn my bike off (car too) and put my hands where they can be seen.

I don't mention a CHL unless asked.

I don't take off my helmet and record the whole thing, partly because it is safer on the road side in a helmet. If they want the lid off I put it on the bike with the camera facing backwards to us.

COH is usually pretty professional. Metro too. Nobody complained about the camera the two times I recorded getting a warning. One cop (moto cop) was really interested in it. Had never seen a gopro.

I think this comes down to a few not knowing the law. Carrying concealed is completely different from merely having a CHL.

I am not sure whether it's better to hand over my CHL with my driver's license or not. For sure the LEO will find out about the CHL when he runs my driver's license. My CHl instructor said to just hand it over, and I've done that before and still got a ticket.

This time though, I only gave him my DL. He did ask if I was carrying, but did not seem to make a big deal of it.

RacerX, that's a raw deal to get felt up. I hope he didn't get too, uh... personal with you.

if i remember correctly, a few years ago, it was a class felony if you did not tell the cop you had a chl during a traffic stop, but they changed the law so now you are not obligated to show your chl anymore.

You only had to give him your CHL if you were carrying at the time, but it's still a good idea to hand it over

Only gotta present your CHL if you're carrying when asked for ID by LEO.
