Loud backfire on morning startup

I've got an '07 ZZR600 with a D&D can and carbs rejetted to match, and I sometimes get a loud backfire when I first start it up in the morning. It doesn't happen on any other startup during the day, and if I get the choke just right it won't happen in the morning either. Sometimes I think I smell gas when stopped in traffic, but not always and I'm not sure if it's me or one of the cars around me. The bike runs fine and idles fine, just the occasional blast to wake up the neighbors. :icon_bigg

Greg,
It's probably igniting some of the unburnt fuel in the exhaust pipe. It won't harm anything.
